Default Oil Filter

Hey guys,

I was wondering what oil filters are recommended for an SC. I heard that the one people use, 90915-20004, has been discontinued. What is another good oil filter to replace that one? Thanks

When was it discontinued? I bought those 20004 from SUPRATRD, he works at Carson Toyota. I think it was 6.99 each in a pack of 10. I don't think that's such a bad price. But good oil filters is like synthetic oil. You have to ask yourself if you really need it. Well a good oil filter isn't 4 times the price of a standard, such as mobil 1 is $4 a quart to a $1 quart of standard. Synthetic oil supposedly allows you to have a longer oil change interval, and so should the high grade oil filter.

There was an oil filter comparison test on a website. I don't know about it's validity, but here's the link: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

Mobil 1 filters are excellent as well. They have a synthetic filter media that milters out smaller particles than your "average" oil filter. Works quite well if using synthetic oil.

Default AMSOIL OIL & FILTERS

Just changed oil & filter on RX 330. Put in AMSOIL 5W-30 & Amsoil Filter.

Had to remove lower front cover to get at filter but it was easy then. Have used AMSOIL products since 1980 & never a problem. It is better for the engine both summer & winter time, less wear & better mileage results. Big plus, once a year oil changes with filter every 6 months.

Default I AM USING THE AMSOIL FILTER AS WELL

I decided to go the entire AMSOIL route myself, and I have been very pleased. Like the previous post, I have been using AMSOIL products for a long time...since 1981, and there has never been a problem.
For those of you that still like the Original Lexus Filter, Bobby @ Carson Toyota assures me that plenty are still available there. He says that if they are bought 10 at a time, it drops the price to $6.95 per filter. Better order now while you have the chance.

i cleaned out two Toyota dealers by my house, i bought out remaining stock at one, and Concord Toyota has plenty, a heads-up for the Bay Area people, go there and ask for the Japanese filter.

Question

I've heard amsoil is pretty good stuff (pretty much the same as the Mobil 1 oil). I wonder how their oil filter compares to the Mobil 1 filter?

I, too, just ordered some high-quality 90915-20004 oil filters from Bobby at Carson Toyota. He gave me the option of buying either the normal ones (i.e. YZZD3 seres) or the Japanese filters (i.e. 20004 series filters), which surprised me as my local Lexus dealership can't get them anymore. As Carson Toyota can get them, I promptly ordered a case of 10 90915-20004 oil filters for $69.50. Order them while they're hot. . . and available!

From what you know Seattle, what are the differences between the filters you mention?

I'm not an oil filter expert, but here are comparisons of the venerable 20004 vs. the YZZD3 series Toyota (Lexus) oil filters (from what I've read and assimilated):

1. 20004 has a better, more durable construction (different oil baseplate, and possibly higher quality anti-drainback valve)

2. Most importantly, 20004 has better filter media (thicker synthetic element vs. thinner pleated paper media)

The newer, lower-cost YZZ series filter was designed to compete against the lower cost Frams, Purolators, etc. How it stacks up to them is another matter of discussion. In any event, for the cost difference of $3, I'm more than happy with paying more for the tried-and-true, higher-quality Toyota 20004 filter (so long as it's available).

Thanks for the head's up on these filters GSEREP1!

They are holding 2 cases for me. I was down to my last 2-20004's so now I can rest easy for the next 100K miles.
