By the time I was already about 2,300 miles into my trip, there had been 15-20% consumption. I added some more 5W-30. By the time I got back to Mexico City, it was only down about 10%, but the color was a little darker. Normally, I change it every 3,000 miles with synthetic given the conditions, but it seems even highway miles eats oil.
This is so strange...........

I never ever have to top up mine............. I have checked it on several occasions, and the consumption is so minimal (almost negligible), that it does not make any sense to top it up. Why is yours burning so much oil? What is the mileage on your engine?

I agree with rs as well about using the Mobil 1 oil filter along with the Mobil 1 oil.
Are these mobil filters available for the GS as well? Where can I buy them?

I have got 73K on my vehicle. This never seems to happen with 15W-50. The only things I can think of are that the low oxygen level (25% less than sea level) and the hills that I have to climb consumed more oil on the lower weights. Interestingly enough, Toyota told me their vehicles experience similar issues when new in the Mexico City area, and for this reason use a higher weight oil. In fact, most oil sold here is of the higher weight variety.

On my trip, I must have been averaging 85 mph. The cops are nowhere to be found at night in the States, even using a Valentine One, plus in Mexico any speed goes. Wondering if the high speed had anything to do with it. However, no leaking, and when driving normally no problem.

Good point on the Quaker State and the Castrol. Unfortunately, I rarely see the 5W-50 weight and when it is available for sale you are talking about $15 US per liter (no joke), Mobil 1 goes for about $9.99 per weight and is more commonly available.

Hell, it may just be my high speed driving over these hills.

Wow Lex, I didn't realize how expensive synthetic oil was in your neck of the woods. I'm not sure what to suggest then......except if you have the means, try the 5W 50 method just once for an entire oil change & report back to us as to your findings....good luck!

I just got a reply from a friend who moved back to North Carolina after working for two years in Guajalajara. She has a 2001 RX300 FWD. Although not as high as Mexico City, she also reported consumption problems with using M1 5W-30. Yet, she is still using it in NC, and after three months, none of the problems that occurred within Mexico. This has to be a climate/environment issue.

The only problem I had with 15W-50 was the car had a decreased acceleration. Surprisingly, I still average about 16 to 17 mpg, regardless of which grade I use, even after resetting the computer both times. I am currently working with Toyota on this issue, as I understand plan are already underway to bring Lexus here within the next year.

The reason is because of the much thicker oil grade which is understandable considering the temps that Mexico reaches constantly. Hopfully when the bring Lexus there, more light can be shed on your issue.

Actually, if you are referring to high temps that only occurs in the flat, low north. Both in Guadalajara and Mexico City you are up several thousand feet. I have never seen the temperature hit 90F in Mexico City. However, Toyota Mexico is well aware of this issue.

Sorry Lex, didn't mean to stereotype the weather in Mexico......my bad I assumed it was extremely hot year round all over & didn't consider the mountain areas. People assume Canadians all live in Igloos & snowshoe it everywhere to get around meanwhile it get's hotter quite often than Florida in the summer lol. My applogies, I'm just having a hard time trying to figure out why your oil consumtion is so high.
