Thanks for all of your help. I just added a bit of coolant to the reservoir. It is now about a half an inch above the low line when cool. I also misunderstood the point of the reservoir. For some reason, I thought that the coolant would drain out the bottom of the reservoir and into the radiator when needed. I didn’t realize that it actually gets sucked out through the top.
and for what it’s worth, I just took a five hour round-trip road trip on Friday. I watched the temperature needle very carefully, and it never budged from right in the middle.
A good tell to see if coolant level is okay is if you have proper heat. If you ever hear a "rushing" sound inside the car you have a leak.
Reservoir has only one job, buffer coolant as it expands and contracts (about 2% volume change from cold to operating temp). The radiator cap is what allows the back and forth based on temperature.
