Default Roof Rail extension?

I have a (new to me) 2009 LX570. We have an old Thule cargo carrier that sticks out too far off the back and prevents the rear lift gate from opening all the way. Moving the cross bars all the way forward still doesnt give us enough space. I was going to buy a smaller cargo carrier when my cargo carrier dealer pointed out that there are other points on the roof near the roof rails that may be for a roof rail extension. Or maybe moving the rails forward?

If so, It appears I would need to be sure to never tilt up the moonroof . . .

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I've also read that you can install Land Cruiser roof rails on the LX 570. They are longer. Has anyone done this?

You might have already seen them, but there's some posts on the https://forum.ih8mud.com forums about swapping in the LC rails...this is one of them https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/wha.../post-13745617

I had the same issue as you and was fortunate to find a used LC roof rack and swapped it. Read the ih8mud.com for installation.

Thanks for the advice.

Any documentation or knowledge on how much you can safely put on a roof?

Here is a youtube link to a Toyota Landcruiser 200.
BE CAREFUL not to put TO MUCH pressure pushing down on the roof rack bolts. You might unintentionally dislodge the bolt on the underside of the roof.
This is noted on the video a couple of time.

Good luck on your project.

150 pounds per your OWNERS MANUAL or the sticker on the rack.

i always figured if i had something heavier than 150 lbs, i would wedge in something between the object and the bare roof to spread the excess weight around. something like a stiff block of packing foam.

like this
