Has anyone tried the new 21 inch tires available...either the Yokohama Geolander or the Toyo Open Country H/T II?

 

We have Toyo HT II's on both our LX and the Land Cruiser, not to mention a 3/4 ton Dodge diesel. Great treadwear and very few balancing weights necessary.

That said, 21" tires are a joke off-road at a certain point. Sidewall cushioning is almost non-existent. I suggest 18" wheels if you're on FS or BLM "roads", add a little washboard and you'll get a preview of purgatory.

Basic physics indicates the taller the sidewall, the more cushioning.

 

I dont think he was looking for a physics lesson.

The 21" wheels and tires not only look better IMO but they are more than capable for 99% of their service duty and that includes running trails.

 

Thanks for your suggestion, but changing the wheels out is not something I want to do right now. I like the aesthetic of the 21 inch wheels, and I do not go off-roading. The vehicle is used to cart the family around. I am looking at the 2 tires I mentioned because they are much cheaper than the stock tires.

There are now few options for 21 inch size in addition to OEM tires. First it was Yokohama, then Toyo and now it seems Michelin is also producing the tires in this size.

As per tire rack, these would be available on Oct 18th. However seems pricey to me.

 

Just installed the 21" Yokohama's and drove home in extremely heavy rain, to the point where people were driving 40 mph on a 70 mph freeway with no one in front of them. Tires seemed to perform well, but I've only put ~30 miles on them so far. Truth be told, the LX570 is my wife's vehicle and I personally don't care for it, but it keeps her happy.

I think the Yokohama's will do just fine. In addition, our service advisor has a LX with Yokohama's and he hasn't had any complaints.

 

Michelin's are my normal go to, but seeing as these are summer tires (I live in WI) that's a deal breaker. I personally think these are overkill for the LX570, but again, just my opinion.

 

Wife's 16 LX is due for tires soon - leaning towards the Yokohama tires if anyone else has any experience with them? $1.1k for all 4 (vs $1.7k with the OEM Dunlops) + install..

Got my toyo tires for all 4 for $940. They had a 15 percent tire discount from Simple Tire. Will probably get it installed next month.

 

We had the Yokohama's delivered for $1091.96 from Tire Rack and paid about $90 for mount/balance while I had the vehicle in for an Enform software update at the Lexus dealership. They wouldn't let me ship the tires to them directly, claiming limited space, so I shipped them to the house and loaded them up. Dealer wanted $1650 to have the exact same tires installed without Tire Rack.

As for the quality of the tires, I think they're perfectly fine for our use. The LX570 is my wife's daily driver and it may see an occasional speed bump at Costco or in a mall parking lot, but not off-road use. I drove it for ~20 miles on the highway at 80 mph and didn't notice any noise difference from the stock Dunlops. Seems like a no brainer for our use given the price.

 

What about the ride quality? Any difference there, for you or your wife. My 2008 LX had a noticeably better ride than my 2018. I think those old seats were more comfortable also. Can't help that, but I could change tires. Thanks for any info.
