Default Brake fluid change

I had my 30K service done today, and the dealer said they cant do a break fluid flush because there is a pump in the system. They noted that the Brake fluid appears clean and does not be changed on the invoice. I told them the manual says to change the brake fluid at 30K miles and the advisor claimed that it is not supposed to be changed unless it is visible dirty at which point they would bleed the system.

Post your dealer's name and location, just to save another owner here from dealer service stupidity. Once your truck is out of warranty, I'd search for a good independent shop.

Back on topic...

1. Without a pump in the system, the brakes would not work. Period.

2. You can flush the brake system, excluding the ABS mechanism, by simply removing as much old brake fluid as you can from the master cylinder, and then topping it off with fresh fluid. Start the truck and pressure will be applied to the brake system. Attach a short length of rubber tubing to each caliper bleed valve. Loosen each valve with a wrench and drain into a container until you see clear (fresh) fluid. Then close the valve and proceed to the next one. Check and top-off master cylinder fluid as you go. It's a 10 minute job on a lift. Other methods include vacuum bleeding or pressure bleeding through the master cylinder, both with the engine off. Any decent mechanic, amateur or professional, knows this is ground-zero basic wrenching.

3. You need TIS (Toyota's diagnostic and test software) to bleed the ABS. That's also a 15 minute job.

hth and let us know what happens with your "dealer".
