Default Age vs. Mileage


Curious to get opinions on age vs. mileage when shopping for a used LX570. I’m focused on a 2013-2015 year model and I believe there is little to no difference between those model years. That said the age and mileage are big drivers of the price. Assuming condition was consistent would you focus more heavily on the year or mileage when shopping? For example, would you be interested in a 2013 with 47k miles vs. a 2015 with 57k miles. Obviously there is a bit of a price difference but in a scenario like this would you lean to a 3 year old vehicle over a 5 year old vehicle assuming you could afford either? Or do you consider age less of a factor than mileage?

I think year is what matters to me ...the mileage/ condition and the maintaince is the second variable; out if they are only 10k in mileage apart I would pick the cheaper option; I would also go for a CPO, my lx570 rear ac stopped working 2nd year of ownership was covered under warranty they found a small leak in the pipe.

it was a 2 thousand dollar fix so I was glad I had a cpo. I also had them replace the steering wheel because the sticking was coming off.

For me mileage is important. I recently bought another Lexus. I could have bought 1 year old with 20-30K miles. Instead I bought 4 years old with only 7,100 miles. If tech/body style is the same (as it was in my case), then I prefer the lowest miles.

If body style changes, I prefer the newest body style

For me, CONDITION (and I'm not just talking about cosmetics, but mechanical/wear and tear and hours in operation) is tops, then mileage, then age. I'd rather have a vehicle with 75K highway miles than a stop and go city vehicle with 40K.

Get a LA vehicle, low miles drives 5 miles to work and home everyday but it takes 1 hour each way so they are agv. 5 mph . I would reather have a vehicle that drove 30 miles a day at 40 mph.

2013 to 2015 are the same in all aspects, I will certainly go for fully serviced at dealer car with the lowest mileage and I would not care about CPO or not as these cars are bullet proof.

Just remember miles and engine hours can be way different. Look at the car fax to determine where it was owned.

Thanks for all the responses. It's interesting to see so many people recommending the CPO vehicles so frequently on this site. I know any car can need repairs but I expected to hear very few issues like a typical toyota/Lexus reputation. I like the idea of a CPO car but the dealers seem to me to be asking way too much when compared to non-CPO cars. (More than $2.5k to comparable non-CPO cars)

i have bought CPo and non CPo used and plenty of new vehicles
My Acura TSX CPo covered $5,700 worth of work under warranty that Acura paid My LS600hL covered $8,100 under CPo I am not 100% sold on CPo still but lexus/Honda/Acura/Toyota are still machines and not always perfect I am on my 2nd 200 series. First had cam tower leaks and power steering leaks and kdds issues I have had land cruisers since the the mid 80s and every generation. My FJ62 and my 06LC 100 has been the most reliable . My 2000 LC 100 series was the least reliable

Believe me I've tried. Latest example is dealer asking $54k and KBB data indicating something in the lower $48k. I got them down $2k and they said that was they best they could do and we were still over $1.5k apart with my best and final offer. Again, I like the concept of CPO, and I've bought one several years ago, but it seems like the dealers around me are valuing them way more than the $2-$3k estimated cost of CPO. I'm wondering if finding a car non-CPO but still a little more time under warranty and considering an extended warranty might be a good alternative

I am very fortunate perhaps, but this is the reason I prefer to buy new cars and hold them for a long time. On the one hand I get a virgin car without any prior issues with the exact color combo (and sometimes) options I want. On the other hand, by keeping them for a long time the total cost of ownership (TCO) is still low enough compared to buying a used CPO vehicle. Specifically to your question, I would buy the latest model I could afford even if the mileage is a little higher. I would stay with vehicles under 50K miles though.
