Thank you ... the question has been answered! There is a difference, it is negligible (two horsepower), but the real reason is marketing, which is what we all suspected.
Regards,
Wonder why the LX570 in 2011 required oil/filter changes every 5k miles, per the owners manual but that changed in 2013 to every 10k miles? Anyone have info on this and the 87vs91 issue.

I suspect Lexus switched the LX to synthetic motor oil as they did for the 2010 GX 460, which now requires oil and filter changes only every year or 10,000 miles.

Talked with Lexus dealer lead tech. No difference in oil or engine, it's just marketing. The Market wants longer maintance intervals and low maintance cost. So Lexus knows that 10k with their 0w20 synthetic in this engine is not a problem. How I wonder about the need for premium fuel?
I get much better gas mileage with premium. I check every time I fill and I stopped using regular after awhile as it was not as efficient.
I never heard any pinging or anything on regular though it seems to run just fine. For the extra $209-$300 a year I'll just use premium
I checked the difference many years ago in my 2012LX and the difference was very small, not worth the extra money for sure. BUT, each to his own, I was stuborn and did Premium for a long time until there becase such a difference in price and then went to regular. Gaining two horse power for using Premium is not worth it to me.
I picked up my new LX570 last night and I would bet that the dealer filled it up with regular!
This thread is so old, I even posted in it a few years ago! LOL!

The price difference in central Texas at Exon is 30 cents a gallon. For me that costs me $10 a month more to use Preminm. $90k vehicle avg. income of owners $150k per year. Increased cost to follow Lexus recommendation 32 cents a day

and you have the choice to pay for those extra two horses if you wish! There is just little point in it unless you love the oil company that sells you your fuel.
Like I said, I did for a long time but will not do it again.

Not the 2 horses it's the possible pinging. If your LX was pinging I doubt you could hear it? Exon is 93 octane could do every other tank and be at 90 octane. Plus I own oil stocks

On regular the LX will seldom if ever ping. The computer takes care of these things to make sure it does not.

On my LX470 it says Premium fuel recommended. On my LX570 it says REQUIRED. My CLS 63 AMG also said required. Recommendations from the OEM is one thing, required is a different story. Since it might make a difference I will error on the side of caution. But I've owned a lot of Lexus products and never heard of anyone having a problem from using Regular. Which most LX470 owners seem to do.

Great logic
Test drove a 2011 LX570 yesterday, checked out a 2014 Land Cruiser today...both dealers admitted its the same powertrain on both rides and 87 is ok to run in the LC and LX. Ok does not mean optimal, but for those who don't want to justify the cost, the suv will still keep on running
Though I'm not saying anything new, the LX a little more plush and interior equipment/quality of leather was pretty evident compared to the newer LC...

I paid $52 for mine in Austin at a Toyota dealer. Had 29k miles perfect Lexus service records at a Dallas dealer, it was a lease return. Has every option except radar cruise. Good hunting
Got to clip on pic to open and turn it right side up.

It really breaks down to if it makes you feel better using premium, go for it. The LX does not care, it is the driver.
