synthetic oil
Hello all,
my first oil change was @ the Dealership is free. Where I bought the truck and they did not use Synthetic oil. now the time is up for 2nd oil change.,should I change it myself with Synthetic oil or bring it to the Dealership and have them change with Synthetic oil. My question is. how much do I save? what else need to change beside oil and it's filter. is it worth the time.
thanks for any advise.

Hi,
Both my wife and I have GS and RX, I would recommend using Mobile 1 oil and Toyota OEM filter. DO NOT buy the filter for Lexus dealers. They will charge you for Lexus Logo Badging. Did not even take the cars back for the 1st free oil change. Did it all at home. 4X4 is a lot easier to do it yourself. But my GS with lower suspension needs a little bit more work. But I do it because I do not trust the kids working on my cars.
You can also find alot of Toyota OEM oil filters online which will fit and wokrs perfectly. I bought a bunch of them while I was in Japan a few years back and it not a problem. If you decide to do it yourself, then you will also need to change the oil drain plug metal gasket every other oil change.
Hopes it help. By the way, if you change your oil every 5K, your car will treat you well for many more.

got oil change today from the Dealer. It was not that bad, $22.00 for labor $48.00 for synthetic oil. $8.0 for the filter and $2.00 for a gasket. altogether is about $ 85.00 not bad at all.
thanks for all the input.

Factor in a half hour of your time to drain and refill -- The $22 isn't too bad. So...labor's not too bad, but you got nailed on parts.
check out your local Toyota dealership next time (if you need to hit a dealership). Tell them you want an oil change for the 2004 Land Cruiser -- same engine, same parts.
But then again...it's your cash...
