Default Keep or trade up newer? Help me decide.

You are the perfect person to bounce this idea off of, since you understand land cruisers and LX’s. Here’s the deal – My wife’s 2006 LX 470 has 167,000 miles on it. Looks wise, it is literally like it’s out of the show room. Not a scratch, leather inside is perfect, etc. we have kept it perfectly maintained and every service has been done at the dealer since brand new. Always a Brentwood car until us. We are due to have those air shocks replaced, which will be a couple thousand dollars or so. With the mileage, though I know it is very low for those models, we are almost wondering if we should go ahead and trade up to the newer one. We are definitely not just looking for something to buy, but rather just trying to think what makes the most sense. The dealer really wants ours, naturally because I’m sure he can sell it quickly due to the condition and how it’s been maintained. We were looking at a 14 with 60,000 miles that is $47k. The dealer has offered us 14 for ours, which I feel like I could get more if I sold it out right. I know that is very expensive and, again, more than we would normally pay but my wife is set on staying with that model. And, it almost makes sense to go a little bit more and get 60,000 miles versus getting 100,000 miles right off the bat. If we are going to trade down in mileage, we need to make it enough to justify the difference.

I get a little excited about the newer technology but worry is regret getting rid of one that’s been perfect maintained. Part of me thinks we either trade it right now before we get closer to 200,000 miles or we need to decide to keep it and run it into the ground.

So, what’s the scoop and what would you guys do?

Thanks! Justin

Hi Justin, good problem to have! I have a 2005 LX470, ~125K and I'd keep the 2006, 2nd gen:
1. I like the look of the 100 series. Not so much the 2014.
2. The 100s are BEASTs. I sold my 98 LC in 2016, 225K miles for about $4500 and not nearly in the shape of your 2006.
There will always be demand and a "cult" following for the 100s. So when you're ready to sell, even 5 years from now, you'll grt top $$$
3. Yes, you'll have some "maintenance costs"; the biggest is timinh chain at ~200K . Rough #s for brakes, 1K each for front/rear, 1K for tires every 5 years.
4. Yes, the 2014 is still under factory warranty (?) but you'll also have routine mainatenance cost not covered by warranty.
5. I don't get too excited about new technology-more to go wrong. (The only technology I miss in my 92 500sl is bluetooth phone)

I preume there is a problem for you to replace the air shocks but there are less expesive conversion options to standard suspension.

Of course, if money isn't an object and your wife likes the newwer style, personal preference will prevail.

Best results with either decision!

I'd keep yours and do a little maint.....convert out of the air suspension to a regular strut/shock type susp. There is a company I believe in NC that sells conversion parts. You don't mention if you have another car? if not....keep yours anyway and buy another Lexus....lol!! Another LX?

JHolder,

I have an '05LX with 140k on it and the original owner. Been considering the same thing as you but after 11-years in the family my kids get sad when I talk about trading it. The shocks aren't that big of a deal and they are hydraulic, not air. If you haven't changed out the fluid you really should soon. You may want to go to IH8Mud as there is a huge owner base there that can tell you anything you need to know about the 100 or 200 series.

HR2 is definiely correct. Scheduled maintenance to flush and repack the AHC fluid is 60K when you change the transmission fluid. I and more than a few others have dropped that to every 30K, or every fourth oil change. Fluid is unbelievably cheap v. replacing parts.
