LS500 Engine Oil and Filter
Trending Topics
Anyway, I am nearing the time for what may be my last “free” oil and filter change.
I guess it would be nice to have all oil changes thruout the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty done at the dealer. My only issue with that is that I live 100 miles from the dealer. I have 48,000 miles on my car, so the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty will begin at 50,000 miles I assume. What about the 6 year 70,000 powertrain warranty? Does it overlap with the L Certified warranty??

My limited understanding of the four free maintenance of the L/Cert:
- 1st visit is 5000 miles or 6-months (whichever comes first) after Cert vehicle purchase date. This visit does not include oil change since it was done (supposedly, and using full synthetic 0w20) during the certification process before selling as certified. This just include tire rotation, inspections of floor mats, etc., car wash, and any customizable settings the "new" owner might request.
- 2nd visit is 5000 miles or 6-months after the 1st visit (and not 10000 miles or 1-year after purchase). This does include first free oil and filter change, tire rotation, various inspections, car wash and remote battery change.
- 3rd visit is a repeat of the 1st and is 5000 miles or 6-months after the 2nd.
- 4th visit is a repeat of the 2nd and is 5000 miles or 6-months after the 3rd. This includes the 2nd and last free oil change.
The manuals has to mention to do the oil change of 5000 miles since there would be situations when/where full synthetic 0w20 is not available (think emergency cases; also, most 0w20 are fully synthetic, some are only synthetic partially, ie synthetic blend as you already know). But if you are following the 2 years free maintenance L/Cert at the dealer, this 5000 miles oil change should not be the case.
It is nice in your case to have 2 years unlimited miles of additional Certified Basic Warranty to add onto when your car reaches 4 years/50,000 from original in-service day. This gives your car a total of 6 yrs unlimited miles of Basic Warranty, which beats the original Powertrain warranty of 6 yrs 70k. Someone else who buys a Lexus CPO car after the original Basic 4 yrs/50,000 would just have the 2 yrs unlimited miles Basic (might also have some Powertrain left, but I guess any Powertrain repair would fall under the L/Cert in this case?).
Just for conversation, as I am no expert on this and might be wrong.

Runflat tires are the big nemesis on these cars. The 5,000 mile interval for tire rotation seems to be an effort to get as many miles as possible out of the runflats, which apparently ain’t much. Inner edge of mine appear to be wearing down fast. Dealer quoted me an absurd price on a new set. Lexus manual says it is okay to run regular tires.
Getting customers into the service dept. is also a way to sell other stuff, with which I don’t have a problem.
As for 0w20 oil, I have yet to find any that is not full synthetic. My dealer says they use Mobil1, which doesn’t have quite the reputation of some competitive brands. Oil changes worry me. I always wonder what I am really getting. I have a great independent mechanic who will use whatever oil I ask for, plus he lets me watch. I will be going to him after my 2 years is up.
Wait a minute, I will be 79 in 2 years.

I have 6.5"/32nds left after 27.5k after 2 alignments on my factory tyres
Good question about the alignment. My AWD car got dealer alignment at 27,000 and 36,000 miles. It’s now at 48,000 miles. All 4 tires seem to be wearing most at inner edge, which might indicate excessive negative camber. That may be normal on an AWD car. I don’t know.
I suppose if I question alignment, the dealer will want to do a gazillion dollar alignment. I will ask.
I would be very happy if I could get 30k miles out of my runflats. I’m afraid I’m not even going to get 20k.
