I've used Mobil 1 synthetic for years but Canadian Tire where I live has sales on Pennzoil products between $32 and $36 for 5 litres and Mobil never goes on sale and is $60 for 5 litres.

That is too bad. Walmart sells 5 quarts (almost 5 liters) of Mobil 1 0W20 EP for $27.

Not to harshen the vibe but please be aware that Mobil1 oils are like most counterfeited ever. In our parts people just avoid using those completely due to fears of getting a fake and ruining an engine (that happens a LOT here). And don't get me wrong - people aren't buying it in barrels from shady smugglers. Many huge retail and wholesale chains are poisoned by fake oil and parts nowadays... Why? I don't know. Money, probably.

hi, what would it be without chiming in to a oil thread.... lol

Mobil 1 extended performance is a great oil,

and Penzoil platinum is as good or better, derived from natural gas as opposed to oil stock...

if can avoid the regular mobil 1 unless changing oil every 4 to 5k, its ok
the EP is the one they used in the Las Vegas field study 10 years ago..

good luck

According to some, Exxon Mobil is now buying gas to liquid base stocks from Shell (Pennzoil) because of raising cost/availability of the higher quality PAO. And everyone is calling it group lll plus. And that is now the new formula in the Mobil1 EP. I don’t know if that’s important or not, probably isn’t, but if you are thinking you’re getting a 70% formula of PAO in the Mobil1 EP...you no longer are.

I’m just surprised that Exxon, as big as they are, are having shortages or haven’t jumped on the gas to liquid bandwagon themselves. Must be cheaper to just buy it from Shell at this point?

Not that it really matters, BUT IF the oil bottle you’re buying looks like the one in that picture...that is the old formula - and many would say the better formula. The formula in that bottle has the 70% PAO base stock (pure synthetic like an Amsoil or a boutique brand). The newer bottle has a Triple Action + symbol on the top right of the bottle. That is the newer version without the PAO base stocks. And the weight if the oil plays a part in this as well...only the 0W16 and 0W20 have the higher PAO levels. The 5W30 and any of their high mileage EP oils only had 25-30% PAO.

And I say, “not that it really matters”, because there are arguments that PAO vs group lll plus, are very competitive/comparable/have their own pluses and minuses. And I’m sure that’s true. All brand name synthetic oil with proper certifications are very similar. We’re splitting hairs here...which is fun to do. Haha. There’s something about thinking buying the better oil will help your car. I’m a sucker for it.

Above is correct, I have over 200 qts of the older style in storage. Now I'm just buying the normal silver bottle and doing changes every 5k

What is wrong with TGMO? Made specifically for the engine….

I went to 10k changes and changed the oil monitor warning from 5k miles to 10k and top off with TGMO 0-20W

It's not a top end synthetic and 10k changes will wear out your timing chains.

nothing its a great oil and I believe the Toyota oil is mobil 1 with some enhanced lubrication...

the EP version of mobil 1 is class leading and Pennzoil platinum ,

the regular mobil 1 is not as good as all three mentioned

At 5k intervals you can use any oil and it'll be fine.
