The shields protect the underbody from all road contaminants. If you fall in love with the LS like many do, you'll want to keep it in good shape and not buy corroded replacement parts (pricey) unnecessaryily. Also, the car is engineered to be quiet, missing shields will disrupt that. You can find used parts and the fasteners are pretty cheap on ebay. Then one appointment with a shop lift will have you 100%. Welcome to the forum of Lexus lovers.

I was thinking the same thing and will get the shields installed soon.

+1 on all the recommends to have them installed. Additionally, the smooth under body/covers help achieve good MPG for a rather heavy car with a V8. Congrats on the recent purchase (I also have an '07 Lwb with about 65k miles on her), early retirement gift for yourself? And welcome to the LS460 forum, lots of great people and advice here!
Funny, I just read your initial post and I was going to say cars have been without those panels for over a hundred years, but then I read the sage advice from other members here, so I will defer to them.
Congrats on the new car and I wish you good luck with it. However, without pics, it didn't happen.
