So, I’ve sold my Infiniti Q60 Redsport recently, it was a fun and fast car but due to us having a baby in 2 weeks, I really needed to sell it and look for a new car.
ive always loved the LS. I’ve actually purchased a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio on Carvana but it fell through because my credit union couldn’t issue a check quick enough to meet their 48 hour window. Now I think about it, I’m very glad
I live in southern Idaho and they only have a Toyota dealership. I am moving to Salt Lake next year so that’ll help as far as dealership access goes. But I’m looking at 13+ LS460. My budget is 30k and trying to stay under 100k miles.
AWD, nice if it’s F-Sport but if not that’s fine, no air suspension (just for avoiding future headache) and Mark Levinson system would be nice. Before my Infiniti, I had my first ever Lexus, ‘16 RC350 F-Sport AWD, even though it was a little boring vs turbocharged v6 in Infiniti, interior quality was superior in Lexus and I loved the looks.
Would LS near 80k miles be a good investment? I’d wait till used car price settles but we need a vehicle ASAP. We considered a RX350 as well but I’d love to have a V8, it’ll be my first ‘car’ v8 since a Jaguar XFR (as reliable as the US Government).
All in all, I’m wondering if I can expect Lexus reliability out of it. I crossed shopped with Acura RLX sport hybrid but gosh I wish they made the interior look as good as their exterior.
We will be doing some road trips, I expect to put about 15-20k a year and keep it for at least 5 years so it’ll have close to 200k miles by then
A premium luxury is not a good investment by definition. It is a great cruiser for commuting and long trips. But if you try to use it as a sport car especially while turning, you will be surprised how expensive it is to fix. If you want a reliable car look in RX and ES series. If you are looking for a sporty performance, GS could be a better choice.
I bought a black 2010 Lexus LS460L with 72,00 miles on it 5 years ago with an extended warranty. My decision was based on a few long standing members of this forum. Currently my car has 110,000 miles on it. I perform my own maintenance. The HVAC blower motor was replaced under the extended warranty at 92,000 by a Lexus dealer.
The car is mostly driven around a large metro city with freeways and long road trips. Gas mileage around town isn't great, but on road trips it is remarkable. This car is made for long road trips. It is an interstate eater. It will cruise all day above the speed limit without fatiguing the driver.
Would I buy another used Lexus LS460L ?
Pro: very well built, Lexus support, ease of maintenance, fast and smooth, and people can't believe it is a 11 year old car that looks soo nice.
Con: Disappointing cabin and road noise. Lexus fell short on this for a $75,000 car. When I test drove the car I was oblivious to noise. Possible future $$$ to replace the brake actuator ( Lexus program to replace actuator ends this August), control arms, starter. Also, I am very concerned about the oil consumption rate of these cars above 100,000 miles. What I can gather it starts slowly around 100,000 miles and rapidly increases to 150,000 miles. I am usually down about 1/2 quart every 5k oil change.
Would I buy another used LS460L ? Yes, a low mileage, well maintained 2wd 2012 Gun Metal Gray with all the bells and whistles. (BSM, radar controlled cruise). I would think twice about getting the air suspension option, unless the price was right.
As someone here once said, "Buy all the car you can afford". When looking for a LS460, consider opening the search to any distance and see how prices differ depending on the location. With the internet and sites like cargurus.com, you can find your car(13-15) and for close to what you want to pay. I'd recommend looking for the lowest miles available, no wrecks, fewest possible owners, and solid maintenance history. The Lexus Drivers site has the maintenance for your review. If you can't view it on site, hire a company to put the car thru it's paces and be sure it's as solid as described. Good luck.
All F-Sport LS models have an air suspension, so you can rule those out based on your stated criteria, Idahoan.
Given your present location, you are most likely looking at a long distance purchase and so will need to determine your geographical limit in that regard.
R Z has offered excellent advice, but it is quite rare to find a perfect used car, so be willing to be somewhat flexible as you shop.
I have a 2013 no air. As others have stated, this car is like a magic carpet ride on the interstate. All year I’ve considered getting rid of my LS for something more engaging and sporty like LC or RC F but it’s hard to pry this LS away from me. It’s somewhat boring but I love it!! My wife drives a RX 450h. The LS is the go to long road trip vehicle. Add Apple CarPlay device and it feels like a newer vehicle.
I will attach a recent pic of my fuel mileage on a family 8hr+ road trip. No I do not drive 60mph. Cruise was set to 81mph on Highway and I ran 5-10mph over thru small towns. Even had a few stop and go traffic situations on the highway. Hand calculated mpg was 29.5mpg I believe. Impressive for a V8. Always run in normal mode.

Impressive gas mileage ! I have only managed to get 28 mpg on long road trips.
What tires are you rolling on and tire pressure ?
A small cooler chest behind the driver's and a snack sack behind the passenger seat (LS460L) tops off any road trip.

I want to say that my oil consumption started around 100,000-115,000 miles. Maybe a half a quart, like you, then it was 3/4’s of a quart up until 130,000 or so. At around 150,000 miles it was a solid quart...and then at around 170,000 miles I knew I had a problem. Drinking a quart every 1,200 miles or so. But it was a GREAT car...probably could have kept it going for another 100,000 miles, but it started having a few other things that needed attention and I traded it in.
Would I buy another one? Absolutely, in fact I’d seriously consider a 2013 and up, model. I figure they’ve only improved them as they kept that drivetrain intact since 2007.
