I agree that it looks fine. BTW every oil change I have done on my LS460 has been with 9.5 quarts of fill and that gets me to the mid line on the dipstick. I do let it drain for a long time first to get as much of the old oil out as possible.

We can agree to disagree, that .4 overfill will do nothing to the engine. He asked for an opinion and I gave it, now if you can show me some evidence that overfilling by .4 has blown up ANYONES engines I will never do it again and apologize for giving such bad advice. ALL my cars are high mileage and I'm not saying I've been doing this on them from the start but particularly on the 460 I do it regularly since it does burn oil. I have not had any issues in the last 70k. The 460 holds a total of 10.8 quarts from a dry fill, that's another 1.7 quarts that's left in the engine to coat all the internal parts. Do you really believe that the engine has retained that 1.7 quarts from new until today? I promise you it has not, so that .4 is not going to hurt anything.

While generally your point about over filling engine oil can be true I would not suggest the OP get back under his car, open up the drain bolt an try to eyeball .4 out of the pan. It's just not necessary as you can see by his latest post.

I do the exact same thing. 9.5qts everytime. I'm always tempted to pour in that last .5 quart.

I expressed my personal opinion based on my experience seeing overfilled engines pushing seals out and causing spark plug fouling. Considering some people are doing oil change for the first time, you are giving a bad advice. I prefer the approach - learn first how do it right. There is a plenty of other opportunities to things in a wrong way. Again, it is my personal opinion.

In between, I get less than 1 quart per 5k miles in oil consumption on my LS.

I'm not saying your opinion was wrong I'm just saying in this instance relating to the 460 that .4 is nothing to worry about. I have 150k on mine and 1-2 quarts every 5k is the norm for me although my rate of consumption has slowed somewhat.

You are right, considering the total amount of oil in the engine, 0.4 quarts is not going to do much. I just want new members, who just starting to know that there are some things to be aware.

When you change oil on anything you should start it and let it run for at least 30 seconds and let it sit for 5 more then check level. If you check level without turning it on it will read higher than it actually is.

yep! Did that. Started for 15 min or something. Shut it off. And kept checking after 3 minutes. Finally checked after 20 min of it sitting and it came out perfect. Not low and not high thanks for the advice.

I just wanted to say that there is no need to run the engine for MINUTEs to check the oil level and you could destroy the engine doing this. Obviously if every thing was done correctly you have close enough to the right oil level..... but if you screwed up, and if your questioning changing you own oil this is something easy to do.
If for some reason there is too little oil and your running the engine like this it won't have lubrication. I can only think of this happening in the twilight zone but accidents do happen.
If on the other hand, you have far too much oil then the crankshaft is smashing into it every revolution. You wait 15 minutes.... 30 minutes. shut off the engine and discover that the oil level is way too high! Kind of much later than it needs to be to discover this.
If the oil level is simply too high then the oil is aerated and not suppling the proper support for those 15-30 minutes.

Also if you follow the **** retentive method of oil changing you have ALREADY warmed up your engine. Your draining hot oil not cold oil..( I could go on and on about the benefits of draining hot oil but I'll save you that)
The **** retentive method of oil changing also requires filling the filter up too when its possible.

Striker223 Mentions this. I assume the person meant shut it off for 5 minutes rather than 5 seconds. I think 5 seconds is too short and 5 minutes too long.... but if you want to wait 5 minutes that ain't bad neither.

Yeah I meant 5, I usually check the tires and come back to the oil once I'm done so it's around 5 min
