Default Windshield replacement

Needed to replace windshield from rock damage. As aaa was assisting in the cost I had the dealer install a new oem windshield.

Replaced a pgm aftermarket windshield that the previous owner had installed.

The pgm was solar tinted. Slight grey color. Poor heat and uv rejection. Slight optical distortion viewing crosswise from the drivers seat, easier pitting. Made the ac not work correctly as the dash in the summer driving into the sun got very hot. Required manual fan speed increase.

the oem is the match for the side windows in a slight gold tint. Noticeable different color. According to the older posts here from a lexus company person this glass has both high infrared and UV blocking.

should help the ac in the front cabin area from the less black dash heating and the adjoining areas.

Ac was calibrated for the oem glass it seems. Almost no distortion cross wise from the drivers seat.

Glass had a made in Japan sticker on it. Labeled lexus in lower drivers windshield corner.

new moldings and clips and tape adhesive for the rain sensor.

expensive to do. Will see how it does for pitting and UV and infrared heat rejection as time goes by.

Isn’t the OEM windshield closer to $1000? Some kind of goofy number like that?

The windshield is like $1,500. But, like you found Bob there is definitely a difference between OEM and aftermarket.

I always insist on an OEM Branded windshield.

$959.39 retail. Moldings $81.07. Clips $27.04. Rain sensor tape $52.04. CP labor $495. Tax $96.76

total $1701.30. AAA deductible $250.

Other than the damage the motivation was the noticeable front cabin heating from the non UV and Infrared rejecting aftermarket windshield and the distortion when looking across the windshield.

same POS windshield in our SC 430.

Hmmmm.

AAA uses oem parts for repairs.

If you are taking the trouble and risk of windshield replacement why don’t you protect it with a windshield film? I would.

I have looked into those windshield films, and it looks like they may be more trouble than they're worth...
