Default OEM Battery

I am looking to replace the battery on my 2014 LS. It is the original one. I decided to see how much a replacement OEM battery would cost. Am I reading this wrong? Is Lexus really charging over $700 for a car battery? Why? What am I missing? Is there some reason why I cannot just replace it with a high quality aftermarket battery?

Your car is designed to use a 12V flooded-cell Starting-Lighting-Ignition battery. The exact size depends on your car's options. These batteries are readily available in the US from multiple manufacturers/distributors. A replacement battery that is warranted for 60 months should cost less than $200, installed. Costco, Sam'sClub, Sears Automotive and others are possible sources.

Go with an Optima Redtop, they're about $200 and you can get them at auto parts stores.

Head to AutoZone. They have three versions to choose from. I always take the better when I choose between good better and best.

Hello Dennis,

Thank you for your question. I suspect that it is rhetorical.

I'll give you my short answer: I don't think that a Lexus dealer will install an AGM battery in your LS460, even if you request it. If others have had a different experience, please let us know.

Jeff

For sure. After I retired, I worked at Advance Auto. While this was several years ago, the one thing I can tell you is that the warranty returns on Optimas was extremely high. I personally wouldn't have one in any of my cars.

Yes, Optima quality plummeted when the company was sold and production moved to Mexico. I would never buy one now.

I have a OEM Lexus battery in the LS but I have a Duracell AGM in the SC and I love it. I have never had a battery issues in the SC even after not driving it for several weeks. Battery drain seems to be an issue within the SC family

That is a really good price at a Lexus dealer and great warranty. Is 84 month full replacement or prorated? I imagine it is probably 3 years full and then prorated. Even then it is still very good.
I got Gold battery for LS430 from Advance Auto and they offer only 3 year full replacement and then nothing after that. They used to do prorated after 3 years but I guess they learned their lesson. lol

I got an answer to my own question. Lexus battery has 2 years full replacement and then 5 years prorated.

Is Lexus battery warranty transferable to the new owner? I have the Lexus battery and it has date from just 6 months ago installed by the previous owner.

I wondered this also since the battery was replaced by lexus a couple of weeks before I bought the car from the same Lexus dealer but that was in Chicago and I drove the car back home. When I looked up the details for warranty of the battery it says you have to have the receipt which of course I don't have. So I think if you go to a dealer that knows you they won't get all technical but if you just pop up to a random dealer technically they could deny the claim. I don't see why they would pull a move like that because it's all in the service history but who knows. Either way most batteries will probably not fail within that 2 year free replacement window and the prorated price would more than likely be just as much as a brand new battery.

If it is a Lexus battery and shows up on the service history as being replaced/installed by a Lexus dealership you should be good to go regardless of who the owner is. The Battery was 2 years old when I bought the LS. It went bad within a year. I took it back to Lexus and they gave me a new one at a prorated costs. I showed them where it had been replaced at Lexus of North Miami and no more questions.

Good to know. Thanks!
Mine was replaced by a Lexus dealer in Arizona and it is on the records. Unfortunately it looks like it was a warranty replacement (twice) and original was installed in 2017 therefore it is a moot point. At least I have an almost new battery.
