Shifting Solenoid issue
been driving it for 3k miles so far and it's driving great. shifting smoothly and best of all, no leaks.
also with the pan off, go ahead and replace the transmission filter and clean the magnets on there.

A Transmission story.
I too had the same code P0985. Mine, a 245,000 Km, 2008 LS460 Base ( Obsidian ). I have a Techstream and the Mongoose cable. I was certain, due to my symptoms that I needed a new solenoid.
Symptoms: During a right turn, let off the accel pedal, reapply the accel pedal and Limp mode.
This started as a hesitation on cornering but ended up putting the car into a severe limp mode.
I looked for the best online deal on parts and found that at Mobile Lexus. Why are the dealers all different prices online? Parts came quickly but I needed to get home to do the work. I am currently on assignment in Alabama. When I got home, I pulled the car into my 1.5 car garage and elevated it via 4 rickety jack stands. I crawled under and assessed.
I gathered tools and drained the Trans pan. The Exhaust bracket loosened and moved out of the way. Pulled the pan. Cleaned the pan and Magnets. Replaced the Filter and replaced the Green connector solenoid.
From here I simply reversed the process. All the while dropping rags and paper towels in the fluid collection pan. It went together very smoothly, and the difficult part was, how to get fluid back in.
By the time I got to measure the amount of fluid that came out, so much was soaked into shop towels and paper towels, I had no idea how much to put back in. This threw me off and I totally forgot about the fill port and decided to inject the fluid back through the overflow hole, that is right next to the drain hole. I was able to measure 3 litres out of the drain pan, so I put 3 Litres back in. I had 3 bottles left.
At this point, I needed to follow the fill procedure laid out in the TIS. Bring the Transmission to temp and pull the overflow plug. Nope, didn’t do that. What I did was start it and warm it up then tried to drive it. The car was flairing so bad that I didn’t know what I had done. I was out of time. Had to return to work.
I called the dealer to ask if they could set the fluid level for me. They gave me a date 4 weeks in the future. I called the dealer in Alabama, same deal. Then I called a private Transmission Shop. They had a 3 week wait to even look at the car. I was out of options. I nursed the car over to the shop, about a mile away. 3 weeks passed and I got the call with the prognosis. The vehicle took 3 more litres to fill. He said it was flairing slightly between 3rd and 4th but is getting better as he drove.
I picked up the car and headed the 1380 kms back to Alabama.
It’s fixed! No Flair, no Limp. Better than it has ever shifted while I have owned it.
Here’s to another 250,000 Km’s
Final bill from the shop was $314 CDN. They set the level and added the 3 litres I provided them.
Spark Plugs are next, Wish me luck.
