Can anyone recommend a good code reader for home/personal use for my 2007 LS460?
If you have a old laptop around running Windows XP or higher (hit or miss with 10 depending on version). You can go on ebay and look for Techstream (AKA Hackstream). It's a modified version of the software that the dealers use. It will real codes as well as customize the car with all it's features. It's a must have type thing for a Lexus car if your semi-techy.
You can get a "kit", that includes a cable and a disk with the software for like $15...You just need to supply a laptop.
This is the one I bought to program my key fob and it'll do pretty much anything you need. A few dollars more than some others on eBay but it worked flawlessly with 64-bit Windows 7 and claims full compatibility with 64-but Windows 10. Judging by his feedback, I'd say that's accurate.
Sorry, I recommended the Carista app based on what I perceived was that the O.P. was wanting to casually check his LS 460's codes. I think the Carista app is very good. And can be used to, see any set or pending codes, click links to quickly read background info on codes, clear codes, change vehicle custom settings and observe emissions testing readiness. If the O.P. is looking for more than that, what these other guys have mentioned is spot on.

No question they both will do the job. If you wanted to just check codes, you can walk into autozone for like $40-60 you can buy a code reader that will do that job as well. I know that App is pretty good as well. I guess it depends on what the OP really wants.
As he was a new user here, might wanted some advanced features that Techstream will offer. It does have a learning curve though, for the non-techy person, they could have issues.
If your trying to do custom features of the car, check codes, or troubleshoot issues on a Lexus/Toyota car, nothing beats Techstream,
