Default Dead Battery

I recovered from an almost 4 week bout with pneumonia and went out to the garage to discover my 2014 LS 460L was dead. I hooked it up to a noco battery charger and after 24 hours it is showing 75% charged. The noco manual said this should take around 16 hours. Any ideas? Continue to wait or start and drive to dealer?

Glad you are feeling better, and sorry to hear your car is not. The answer likely depends on the type of battery you have, and how low the voltage went before you got it on the charger. I assume it is the stock flooded style battery, in which case getting it to 100% may be impossible if it got deep discharged. At 75% it should be capable of starting in order to drive it in for replacement. If the battery could not withstand 4-weeks of sitting idle, then it may have already been weak and in need of replacement, or perhaps there are higher than normal parasitic drains at play (i.e. phone chargers, an inverter, a bulb left/stuck on).

Note that AGM style batteries handle deep discharge and recovery much better, which is worth considering. They are more expensive, and do not always last any longer, but do recover nicely from deep discharge and don’t leak acid or corrode like flooded batteries can. Something to consider.

If still under the 4-year 50,000 mile warranty, call Lexus roadside assistance and they will stop by and replace the battery (in my case within 20 minutes).

Ideas: Yes.

Continue to wait: No.

Drive to dealer … only if you think it may be covered under warranty.

Otherwise, battery up yourself, save money and the frustration of dealing with professional wallet thinners.

And then pound your chest in pride when battery completion is complete.

Where in the ATL are you?
