Default Question about tire sizes for 20" wheel

So I just bought a set of 20" staggered wheels. They are 20x10.5 and 20x9. They came with a set of Yokohamas that are 275/35/20 and 245/40/20. I notice that tires(especially the back) look very stretched. By what's in the wheel thread, it appears that this is the tire size that most people who have the same rim size use. Is it just because this is how Yokohamas tires are, or are all tires this size stretched like this? Thinking of buying another set of tires as I don't like the stretched look, but not sure if I should buy a bigger size tire or if just changing to a different brand would fix the problem. Can you guys please share your experiences with tire sizes on 20" rims?

Also, I seem to notice that most people with 22" wheels tend to get 295 tires for their 10.5" width rims. Shouldn't it be 295 for 20" as well if the wheel is 10.5" wide? Isn't the number just a measure of how wide the tire is? So a 10.5" wide wheel should have a 295 whether it's a 22" or 20"? The norm for 20" seems to be 275 whereas for 22" seems to be 295.... this according to everything I see in the LS owners wheel thread...

Tires stretch differently from brand to brand

I run 285s on my 20x10.5

Why do so many LS460 owners go staggered instead of square? I get that the rears get to look 2 inches wider but is it that noticeable that it is worth trading off being able to rotate normally? This is me being ignorant, not me sounding judgy.

On the RWD platform, majority of people put a wider wheel on the drive wheels for better performance, or some do it so they can get a bigger lip. The front wheels i personally wouldn't go more than 9".

On an AWD car, I would keep them all the same.

I have the same width setup as you.
F: 20x9 +30
R: 20x10.5 +40

I had such a great deal on them (flawless rims) and came with tires (also brand new), that I purchased them, but the sizing is not good.
F: 245/30/20
R: 285/30/20

Quick pick reference (I'm AWD btw. I would've preferred square setup much like my OEM wheels, but this deal was just too good to pass up).

Once the tires wear out, I'll be purchasing 245/40/20 and 295/35/20 (or 285 if no 295 is avail)

The recommended tire width range for a 10.5in wheel is 265-295. Keep in mind the aspect ratio can be a factor in the stretched look. The lower aspect ratio means there's less sidewall to flex. I'll briefly explain that, forgive me if you already know. The tire width is expressed in millimeters, in your case 275mm. A "40" aspect means it's 40% of 275mm. So 110mm. A 275/45 would be 123.75mm etc.... Changing aspect can mess with overall diameter from OEM which can lead to speedo and odo offsets though. Use an online tire diameter calculator to determine overall diameter of a wheel/tire combo. (1010tires.com)
In your case I would just go wider with a 285 or 295.
As for the staggered question, most people when installing bigger wheels want to go as large as possible, and on a RWD car you can fit a bigger wheel on the rear than the front because of space limitations in front. This is a choice, though one that means no rotation.

You're currently running sizes that are quite different in diameter, it hasn't caused any problems yet I presume? I have an awd as well, I'm on 245/40r20 and 275/35r20

I've been so sketchy about running off sizes and causing excessive wear on the drivetrain

Since you guys run bigger rims, I was wondering if I’ll suffer performance handling or brake wise if I up my rim size from 18 to 19 for the summer.

If you are running similar size overall as your stock 18s you'll notice no difference, some models come with 19s stock even.

245/40/20 front and 275/35/20 rear is proper plus sizing for 20s on our cars

Your size should be just fine.
Diameter as in how? they are both 20inch, just one is 20x9 in front and 20x10.5 in rear, staggered on AWD which has been done quite frequently across the board here. I know my sidewall is rubberband thin but again, I knew this going in when I got the deal on the setup.

Edit: Once my rubberband tires are used up, I plan to change them to 245/40/20 front, 275/35/20 rear.
I ran them all last summer and autumn without any issues. They aren't on during the winter, my stock setup goes on for that.

Regardless of width? I ask because I have the same problem as the OP. My tire store said they were the only 20" tires that would fit 20x9/20x10.5 without causing problems with the AH. But I absolutely HATE the way the rears look on my car now....
