Default Who Makes Toyota Oil

I had the LS's 70,000 mile service done today. I have always had the Toyota 5W20 oil used in the LS. Today I was told that Mobil makes the Toyota branded oil that comes in the quart bottles and that it was the same as the bulk Mobil that the dealership uses. Is that true?

Dinosaurs?

Sorry Dennis, couldn't resist. Mobil was always what I thought, but I really don't know for a fact.

After I posted my response it dawned on me that some of our younger members would have no idea what I was joking about. So I did a little search and actually found one of the commercials from 1977.

Here it goes -

Paul

The LS has always been serviced with the 5W20 which is indeed dinosaurs. I have always been tempted to move to full Sys but was not sure if I should since the engine had always had the 5W20. Thoughts on going with full Sys next service. Good Ideal or not?

The TGMO is made by Mobil but it is NOT the same as the bulk Mobil oil that is used by dealers. Toyota has a specific spec and additive package and Mobil follows that when they produce it for Toyota.

I'd go to full synthetic with no worries.

Dennis,
My SA told me Exxon/Mobil supplies Toyota and Lexus dealers with synthetic oil in bulk. So I guess it's Mobil 1. Can't confirm though.

According to my mechanic who orders his oil from the same supplier as the local Lexus dealer, it’s not even Mobil 1.
