I have had macs going all the way back to a tangerine clamshell and this is the reason why I would not consider an iphone. Just too restrictive and once your locked in for years it's too hard to crossover. I don't care how seamless the experience is or how great the quality of the files.
I've had Macs longer than that. As to the too restrictive issue, its not a thing for me. I knew it going in. Was fully aware. And no way I'd go Android (spyware masquerading as a phone).
I try format my 16 gb flash drive -fat 32 and 32 bit , then create both file name DisplayoffImage And StartupImage (Case-sen) and a music folder, picture save as Jpeg format, then plug into my car , music working ,but no image ,

The file size is too big. Make it smaller. Also, on USB stick, have only those two folders for Startup and Displayoff, and try again

Here is a thread that goes over it again. I recall comotiger has referenced the link before for others too. I got it to work in the past but do not recall if resolution mattered. I want to say the system just scaled the resolution automatically. It definitely works though and does not require a trip to the dealership. I won't have my car back until Monday and will confirm settings tomorrow.
Just wanted to report back that StartupImage works for me with photos ranging from 3.5 MB to 7.8 MB. Resolution of photos is 4385x3132 and did not require me to resize anything, the LS can scale everything to fit accordingly.
If you have all that Apple lossless get yourself a 5th gen iPod that has been modded. You can find ones on eBay that have flash memory with up to a tetrabyte of storage. Don’t go to lossy! The 5th gen iPods seem easy to update yourself as there is a good video on line. It is on my to do list to buy a used one and modify it myself.
Dolph1, why do we need a "modded" iPod? Modded with what, a modified OS? I don't quite follow here. I need to find some ancient media, aka CDs, to test if I can differentiate between WAV and 256Kbps streaming over BT on the ML system. If so, then I want to look into getting an iPod for lossless audio. There is so much information across many threads and, if I understand things correctly, the best/easiest option for lossless audio appears to be an iPod ALAC connected by USB, yes/no? This setup bypasses the iPod's DAC and equalizers and let's the ML decode the audio bitstream, right?
The modded refers to the size of the hard drive. The largest capacity iPod made had a 160gb hard drive, which is not large enough for people with very large music collections that also happen to prefer lossless. I tried to contact ML directly to find out if the decoding of music on Apple products is happening in the ML head unit (preferrred) or the Apple product. If it happens in the Apple product the 5th generation is the better iPod to get your hands on as they are considered to have the best DACS of all the Apple products. Apple did not like digital leaving the ipod, most audio products connected to iPods were pulling analog from the iPod. I had a response from the US Home Audio Division of ML that redirected me to the ML Automotive Division. I never heard back from ML automotive so I have just sent a chaser but am not holding my breath. Here are the questions I put to ML, I didn’t even attempt to pose these questions to Lexus as I do not think they would be able to answer them.
Dear ML,
... I will share the answer on the ClubLexus LS forum so you will really be answering this for the wider Lexus audiophile community. 1) When using the USB connection to connect an iPod/iPhone/iPad does the Apple DAC get bypassed in that digital is passed directly to the ML system for processing? 2) What brand and model of DAC is used in the 2013 Lexus LS ML system? To the extent these answers apply to the 2014-2017 Lexus LS460 ML Reference system as well can you please confirm as the car remained virtually unchanged between the 2013-2017 model years.
If I ever get a response I will post it to this thread.
One last thing, Make sure your USB is Formatted as an MBR partition and not GPT. This made it work for me. I used a USB that was an OS installer. GPT will not be recognized.

Try formatting a known working USB stick on a Windows computer to FAT32 (that is the default setting), then copy a MP3 file to it. Plug it into your car's USB port and see if the USB tab lights up on the audio screen. If not, then it is possible that a fuse blew (Toyota probably fuses this since it is 5 vdc @ 1A) or there is a connection failure (wiring or connector) of some sort.
