This is a very cool, albeit subtle mod.

I am hoping to try this out soon... just trying to figure out what type of image I'd want to display... I would want something "cool" but not "tacky"... maybe a nice classy hand-rendered picture of the car (like a painting of the car)?

Don't need to be a fancy picture for the start up, it literally flashes for a second then goes away. That image would be great as the display off image.

***I will update this initial post with any relevant info. so we can keep it in one place. I got some info. over on the GS thread but given the 13+ have a slightly bigger screen and different details I wanted to share it here.

First off what the instructions don't say is you must use a USB memory stick that is formatted from a PC. The Lexus HD will not recognize anything formatted on a Mac. I formatted mine with FAT32. I also only used 2 folders named EXACTLY "StartupImage" and "DisplayoffImage". It is case sensitive. You can only load 3 images (.jpg / .jpeg file format) per folder so only load the 3 / 6 total. Simply insert this correctly formatted USB drive into the port in your center console and open the menu on the main screen. Go to General Settings and then select "Customize Startup Image" on the second page down. Select "transfer" then choose your favorite image. In my experience the start up image will only flash for a second upon start up after the Lexus & "L" logo and this lasts a total of 5 seconds on every start up.The Display Off Image will be prominently displayed whenever you choose to have the display off (when you're not using navigation etc.) The image will only populate in the center of the display so you may choose to create any size image but keep in mind you may or may not see black bars at the top and bottom of your image depending on the image created and selected.
What if I don't want a DisplayoffImage? Can I leave out that folder? I'm thinking that when I want the screen off.... I want it off Don't want an image there.

Of course. Or you can load the folder in the HD but just not select it and you will have a blank screen.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. No wonder my Mac-formatted USB stick didn't work. Can't wait to try again with PC-formatted stick.

The Lexus startup sequence is a movie not an image (visible on "Customize startup image" screen). It seems the only way would be to trick the system to play an uploaded movie file or to animate the JPEG image. There may be a way to animate a JPEG - check out this link (http://css.spritegen.com). Let me know if it works! Thanks.

The PC-formatted stick did it. I now have a start up image and a display off image. Very cool! Now if only there was a way to animate the startup image or have it display longer.

This issue had stymied me the last month. I left queries with the Technology Specialist at my Lexus dealer two weeks ago. They promised to call back with an answer, and I am still waiting...

Thank you, Dr. Jekyll, great tip!

I looked into JPEG animation and motion JPEGs but no luck. Those tricks work to animate a jpeg file in a web browser but not in a image viewer like the Lexus display. On the startup Image customizing screen, there are Lexus default movies on the right side. One can select which one plays on start up. It would be so cool to be able to hack in and replace those movies with our own.

I hear you, I think it's because Lexus still maintains control of the startup images and only allows you a smidge of personalization. Regardless that little snip it is still pretty cool in my opinion even though your passengers might go hey did I just see a "???" when you started your car?

I agree. The family hasn't rode the car since I customized the screen! But I am hoping for some smiles, especially for the Display Off image! I think they will miss the Startup Image because it's gone too fast.
