BTW, if anyone is going to spend at least 21 days in Europe and needs a car, France has a great program where you lease a car and it is far less expensive than renting a car, and has many advantages over renting. I think maybe I should post a thread about this in a general automotive forum here. I didn't know about it myself until four years ago and since then I've used it every year. It is not well publicized.
I had to replace both of mine for about twice the number noted in the thread, and this was with my after warranty maintenance shop! Because they are a mylar-like material, they will have stretched in the wind by the time you try to glue them. Add to that the road grime, oil and wax the rails will have picked up and you will find that gluing them is at best a temporary and imperfect repair. As I recall this is a difficult multi-layer paint job to duplicate so painting the rails could also be a challenge.

Yes, I can attest gluing is a temporary repair. I think I will try painting with the touch up paint color for my car. There are two sections of about 4" that are bare. Temporarily I'll try painting them and see how it looks/works. It's going to get cold here soon so I'll see how it looks and plan to do something permanent in the spring.
This issue and the peeling on my wheels are my only complaints about the quality of this car.
I decided to strip the delaminating film off the rails. Using a heat gun on low and working slowly, the stuff pulledd off. There was some glue residue in some areas rthat came off with a bit of work using alcohol, so as not to damage the surrounding paint.
The chrome looks like it is supposed to be there as it accentuates the matching chrome around the windows and doors.
I agree, that does look good. I didn't do anything with mine this fall. I was going to try to paint them with touch up paint, but I didn't get to it and it's freezing here now. I may just do what you did.
As an aside, there is a product called Goo Gone. It is as effective as alcohol and doesn't damage the surface like alcohol sometimes does.
