Surprisingly I feel a power increase. Even at low RPMs. I usually drive in sport, so I am in control of the gears, and it definitely feels different.

It would be very interesting for someone who has done this, to dowmload a decibal meter app on their mobile device and take some readings. Even more so if they do a before and after reading.

I don't think drone is something that will record and play back well.

100% agree.

Also, I have heard (or saw a post) that even aftermarket low restriction mufflers such as Borla or Magnaflow have drone.

True. BUT, if you want sound, your gonna have drone. Me, personally, I don't get annoyed. And if I ever do, Just turn up the ML!

Will this mod affect smog checks?

I can only say for sure in my area. But I image most places are the same. It will make zero effect for emissions compliance in my area. I would imagine the same elsewhere. There's no emissions sensors in this area.

The only possible thing I can think of is that maybe will this difference in exhaust flow, maybe it could affect the upstream performance of the emissions system ... but I highly doubt that.

It would here....they always check for mufflers and cats. The other issue is whether the delete triggers the SES.

I'm having a set of pipes made with a vendor I work with. When I get the fit right, who knows, I may make this an MEK and sell them. It will be stainless steel. Reuse the gaskets, but I may package new fasteners. I'm hoping I have this ready in a few weeks.

One thing I'm running into is that the tailpipes are 2.125" O.D. I'm thinking of running it with 2.125" O.D. and 2.5" O.D. and seeing which one sounds better.

That's a great idea. Mine are 2.5, because i chopped off the megan racing mufflers, kept the pipes like that, and welded from there.
