oil change ls460
as im approaching my 1st oil change, i have some questions as well as some info ive obtained. to start i called toyota to ask them what they would charge if i brought my own oil and they priced me at around $30 with tax including filter, i called lexus and they said around $100. i personally dont know if theres any justification in spending 3 times the amount so if anybody can explain to me something i dont know plz do, 2nd question is what would oil would you choose between mobil 1 or toyotas oil? 3rd, is there any suggestions on oil filters i should buy or just use what the dealer gives me? keep in mind i live in nyc which is far from easy on your car and i deal with extreme weather changes from boiling hot to frigid cold. im sure they are post on this already but im new and i suck at this so pardon me in advance
im adding this to say now since maybe i didnt word it properly, i asked both toyota and lexus what the labor would cost if i brought my own oil, so neither of them are providing me with oil, just actually changing it and providing a filter

Mobil 1 should be fine... 0-20W. I would just use the Lexus/Toyota oil filter from the dealer if you are going to take it there anyway. Maybe consider DIY instead?
Hey, at least you have the option to take it to a Toyota dealer to get a lower price. Here in Hawaii the Toyota and Lexus dealerships are owned by the same company, so I don't believe you get a price break trying to take it to the Toyota dealership.

Oil Change
Dealers usually buy their oil in bulk for the service department and they may choose whatever brand they wish. The oil that they sell by the bottle with Toyota's name on it was made by Exxon/Mobil for many years. This may still be the case. The last time I looked in the service department they were using bulk oil by Quaker State where I was having service done.

Pole Position
For what it's worth I just bought a case (12 quarts) of Toyota 0W-20 synthetic from a Toyota dealer for $7 per quart plus tax. So thats $63 right there (9 quarts). Add the filter and labor and some profit and $100 from the dealer isn't outrageous.

exactly a 100 dollars aint much if you dont have the time. if you do you will only save a few bucks. I like the peace of mind of doing my own oil change but it aint to save a buck.

Toyota's 0W-20 is the best current 0W-20 they know of, over where all of the world's motor oil gurus hang out bobistheoilguy.com
Mobil 1 doesn't really compete with this oil, although they (XOM) do manufacturer it, but to a higher standard than their consumer oils, It is thinner at start-up too, which means less engine wear. The viscosity index is off the chart (this is what you want)
Only the Japanese 0W-20 Sustina really even competes with this oil.
and the next tier would likely be the Japanese Idemitsu made Mazda 0W-20 and then perhaps the Honda 0W-20
Just be glad the best oil is not $20/quart, because this is one product that is truly world class, like the rest of your LS460

The numbers don't make sense. They have to charge you at least a half hour labor cost. Plus you have 9-10 quarts of oil. Plus the filter cartridge. Lets say they charged 30 for labor. Then they are only charging you a little more that $4 a quart for synthetic for 9 quarts. Then you have the filter still that I couldn't fit into the numbers. Are you sure they are using synthetic?

Oil Change
Lexus does charge a lot for oil changes. I had my previous Lexus oil changed at Toyota one time because I was in a hurry. They billed the synthetic out at $5.25 per quart. Most likely came from their bulk oil, not individual bottles, therefore the cost can be cheaper. I was charged $74.00 for the oil, filter, and their so called fluids, brakes, tire inspections.

Hey..everyone who needs a little better info on this matter. My wife has a 2006 GS300 and I took her car to the local dealer that also uses Quaker State and they only charged me $65 with tire rotation...out the door because I used to own a toyota camry and was registered on this website called http://www.toyota.com/owners/web/pages/home you can print out service coupons to use at any dealership. I used them all together and most of them honor every/any dealer coupons no matter what region you live in. I know I'm kinda new to the CL but here is a little info I'm glad to help anyone save a few more dollars. Thanks...

I just had mine changed at my local Lexus dealership last week. I got this ridiculously low coupon from the dealership by e-mail. They were quoting $30 off regular prices. $26.95 or $46.95 for full synthetic. I wasted no time running to get the oil changed. The service writer couldn't believe the price and even made me forward the e-mail to him. Anyway, out the door was $56 including tax and disposal.
