Trim Peel on LS460
I hope I am in the right forum here as this is a question/report on a trim matter. There is a narrow trim strip (don't know what it is called) that goes from the hood of the car up over the top of the cab and back down to the trunk (on each side). It is about an inch wide or so. I am getting some peeling or seperation on this piece. I am wondering is anyone else has had this occur and if there is a fix for it (glue?). This is on a 2007 LS 460, I have had wind noise issues and I am also wondering if anyone thinks this might contribute to the wind noise.

It does not appear to be the paint as it is fairly strong and does not flake of like paint would do. Is the paint applied to a material that covers the trim piece? It appears that the trim piece is underneath the peeled back portion. Not a lot of space to try to fold under and hold. Seems like glue is needed. I have not tried to take the trim piece off and I do not know how it is held on and in place.

I had the same problem on my 08 ls 460 I had a local paint and body shop take them off and repaint both pieces it was the only way too fix the problem , I actually left the two strips at the body shop for a day and picked them back up made sure they were dry and had a friend help me put them back on the strips are held on by clips, haven't had a problem since.

20007 ls460 rain gutter pealing
The trim piece running from just behind the hood, over the doors and ending at the trunk is a metal piece. This piece is universal in that it is not painted the color of the car. The color comes from a roll of tape, that is the color of the car, and is pushed in a slot on each side of the piece. LEXUS relied on a crimping action to retain this plastic tape. Furthermore, the width of the tape is not wide enough. As a result, through heat expansion, and cold contraction, the tape works itself out of the channel on each side of the rain gutter. The Pursuit of Perfection was absent during the design and implementation of this trim.

Thanks for the info. Since my original post in February the length of the peeling piece has not increased. It appears the tape is decently strong. Since now I realize it is a tape on top of the metal trim, I don't see why squirting a little glue to hold it down would be detrimental. I think I will try that.

You may be lucky, for a while. I noticed this first over the read doors, then half way down the back window. Now some separation near the hood. It is just a matter of time ! 7/13/2013 12:49

I finally replaced the trim piece. Bought from sewellparts with discount for$215. Very easy to remove and replace. Took 30 min. I swear that it cut down on wind noise as well.
It is so easy to take off, I may take the other side off (it is starting to peel too) and try to glue the paint strip which I have recently realized is a plastic strip not a painted piece.

ive seen it multiple times on both the 460 and the 430. btw its aluminum under that tape. ive seen it without the tape and if you have a darker car, they look like chrome strips running front to back kind of like the bangle butt 7 series had. I think its kinda cool looking

I replaced both sides several years ago and did not keep any records as to part numbers. I ordered through Sewell parts on line and searched their diagrams to identify the parts. Installation was easy as stated above and the new parts have performed without fail and no peeling whatsoever and looks great.
