Does anyone know what Lexus charges to change the spark plugs?

This is not as simple a question as it appears and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on it. I'm a rather accomplished mechanic and started to change my plugs about a month ago and realized I couldn't get the coil packs out due to interference with the shock towers and other pieces of equipment under the hood. I have Googled and looked around to see if there was a "trick" to removing the coil packs but I haven't found a single reference to it. Do the coil packs disassemble some how? Otherwise, it looks like you'd have to literally lift the engine a bit to remove the packs where it's so tight. That doesn't sound like Lexus to me. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Wow jlawr. Such perfect answer. How did you get that info? Is it available online? I did look at the instructions. Its a lot of work..

 

Last month, had the spark plugs changed for one of my 600HLs, at 60,000 miles. I paid for the 60,000 mile service - $900 I think.. I am not sure.. When I asked about the breakdown, I think they said the spark plug change was around $350 or so (not sure of the number..). I do remember thinking, that it was not cheap to change sparkplugs.. but I was fine with it - typically, both my cars have been troublefree.. Well... except that for all three of my LS cars, the mark levinson amp blew.. and they replaced under warranty.

 

I did it myself. I used a pry bar to slightly move the engine to one side while removing each coil pack. Pry bar against shock tower and cylider head. Doesn't take much to make the coil pack clear. Also had to take the battery and tray out to get passenger side rear out. Plan on a 3 hour job!

Hmmmm, I didn't see that tip in the service manual!

 

How much movement of the engine do you need?

 

I only moved it about 1/8 of an inch which was very easy. The coil packs then came right out.

what plugs did u guys use.. i normally put Bosch Platinum Iridium +4.. but i've been told to use nippon?????(which are the oem)

 

How did the plugs look? I have a 2007 and that year has a 120K spark plug change interval. I'm at 83K miles and was hoping to go another 40K before dusting off the crowbar.

I understand that the 2008 and newer have a spark plug change interval of 60K miles - same engine and plugs as my 2007 -what gives.

 

I forget his name but one of our members is a service tech and he explained the reason. It has to do with Lexus going from only direct fuel injection to going to a dual port system. This fine tuned fuel delivery, but did shorten spark plug life.

 

The plugs still looked very good!
