Need Advice For Someone Considering Lexus for the First Time
I am looking at CPO LS 460's from 08 - 10
I currently own an M5 and I am thinking of trading it in. I've got 4 kids, three are teenagers and I need a bigger car. I really like the LS, but its a totally different car than what I own (which I am prepared for).
Suggestions on Dealers? Things to look for or avoid?
Welcome to CL. The LS is a good car. I don't know of many problems, maybe the wind noise. You can search on that. Very different car from your m5 for sure. This car is floaty and not much steering feedback. Also. I say try a car out and see how your kids like the rear middle seat. It bulk out/up quite a bit and might not be the most comfortable
LS is a very nice car, obviously you can say I am biased but we have not had any major problems with the car since we bought it. Maintenance is relatively cheap compare to cars in its class, nothing compared to your M5 i'm sure. Wish you luck and post pictures once u get it!
Maintenence will be significally cheaper than the BMW, but a LS is nothing like a M5 even the sport version. M5 is a performance sports sedan and the LS is a flagship vehicle geared towards older car drivers who go north and south calmly not NW SE basically swerving. I reccomend the long wheel base to accomodate your family better, heck the teenagers and yourself will feel in a different world with the extra space.
If you are not ready to begin the grandpa driving phase just yet I say go for a 750LI since BMW is familiar to you or a S63/65 AMG then you get the space you need and dont sacrifice performance one bit. Comes at a price though.
I just moved from BMW 325 Cic to Lex, they couldn't be more different as others said.
Floaty is a good word, but you could use quieter, more comfortable, easier to get in and out of, luxurious etc.
My BMW was starting to cost an arm and a leg, after 50k it was falling apart, numerous electrical problems that would come and go, water pump starting to squeal etc.
BMW's are street racers, they go round corners on rails, if you like that stay with them. Lex is fast and in my view more reliable limo style ride.
Lex will soak up bad surfaces, a great mile eater. The difference in road noise is huge. Take a test drive, get one on the freeway, you'll soon know if its for you. Lex isn't a slug, specially in a straight line, but on twisty mountain roads you'll notice the difference.

Thanks!
If you live in Northern California, Magnussen Lexus in Fremont is a very good dealership. Bought all six of my cars there because of initial cost and excellent service.
Seriously though, I think you may be very happy with a CPO LS460. There is plenty of rear seat room and trunk space. It definitely will not handle like your M5, but you will be more than pleasantly surprised at the acceleration on this car.
You will miss the handling and the power of your M5 unless you got another you can play with. LS is a good, reliable, comfortable, and luxurious car no doubt.
Look for a 2010 with the sport package. Even though it still has numb steering it has good reflexes and grip. The transmission is the same as the IS-F and is really good. The 2010s have the updated navigation and audio system which is significantly better than the 2009s. I can't recommend a California dealership though, and it might be a tough package to find.
Over the last 16 years I have owned all three types of LS - 92' LS400, 04' LS430, and I just bought a 08' LS460. The 08' LS460 is an absolute dream to drive and is extremely confortable and roomy. Make no mistake this is a BIG and POWERFUL car and something you WILL notice right away is the lack of sport driving feedback that you are used to in your BMW. I bought the LS460 because the styling of the car is a little less Grandpa looking ("G-Ride") Since your in California, you should not have a serious need for the AWD of the 2009 or newer but, if you do purchase an LS460, I would recommend a 2010 model because of the entertainment features (Bluetooth audio with exemplary control of your IPHONE or other brand of smartphone)GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
