After just 25k on the original Bridgestones, I hadn't decided on which wheel to move up to so I changed gears to find what tires I would be happy with for the interim. After a solid week of researching, I already knew I wanted Michelins, but size ruled out a couple of good choices. I settled on the Pilot Super Sport. Extremely happy as they met both of my biggest wants. Quiet ride with Exceptional handling. They probably won't get me 30k in miles but who cares. Makes the car much better driving until I decide on the wheels I want to move up to.

I had the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 installed yesterday, loving it so far.

After 500-plus miles (mostly in New York City), I'm very satisfied with the recently-installed Bridgestone Serenity Plus tires. The tires are very quiet.

I just bought a 2010 LS460 CPO that has the Bridgestone EL42s, and I'm a bit disappointed in the tire noise and overall comfort. I reduced the tire pressures to 30psi, and that helped a bit with the ride.

Are the Serenity Plus tires really *that* much better? Is it worth it to do a pre-emptive tire swap now, or should I just wait until my current set wears out and replace with them?

I had the Serenity's on my old LS and I thought they were way better than the regular Turanza's and very quiet. That said, if your tires are new I would just wait until they wear out, no need to incur the expense of new tires unless really necessary. I need to get some all season tires for my current LS and one of the guys at Tire Rack recommended the Bridgestone Potenza RE970 Pole Positions for my needs so I may try those next.

Default Michelin A/S Pilot Sport Tread Chunking

Because I had recommended the A/S Pilot Sports as replacement tires and they did well for the first 20K or so, I wanted to let people know that I just replaced the front two tires - only worn to 6/32 inches, but suffering from the infamous tread chunking, where the tread actually comes off in chunks. The Michelin dealer immediately recognized it and gave me a road hazard adjustment (50%) for the two tires. He said Michelin knows about the problem (caused apparently by the separation of two different compounds that they used on the tires). They even has a special code to indicate the problem. My tires date from 2009 when I changed from the original tires. I went to the web and the tire chunking for this tire was on the Jaguar, Acura and Lexus forums. They seem to date from the 2009 period of production. Don't know whether currently made tires still have the problem. Looks like it takes about 20-25K miles to show up.

Default Tires

I mentioned earlier in this forum "Michelins". Mine came with the Grand Touring MXM4. I had the dealer remove them from the car before I signed the contract and put on the Michelin MXM 4, but in a Z profile, and they have a higher speed rating and they hug the road, are very quiet. Mileage as I drive will exceed their advertised mileage rating. I put Michelin's top of the line tires on all of my vehicles. Different styles depending on the vehicle. My 12 4Runner has MS2 Plus and they are great. My previous Lexus had Pilot Sport Plus A/S and they really hugged the road and had great handling thru all four seasons. For me they were the best tire I ever had on a vehicle. As usual though Michelin's tend to cost a little more, but you get more mileage out of them than a like tire of another brand. I had a 1996 4RUNNER Limited with the Michlein LT tire. Vehicle had almost 75,000 miles when I sold it due to a relocation and the tread life still look pretty good.

My car came with the Michelin MXM4s, while they ride decent, it handles like crap compared to some of the other alternatives out there. I drive rather "spirited", so the MXM4s weren't a good fit. Furthermore, they had 15000 miles on them and looked like they were half gone. I like Michelins, but not the MXM4s. The Primacy MXM4 may be better, but they dont make them in 235/50R18, only the Pilot MXM4.

Look where the ratings for the Pilot MXM4 is as far as "Grand Touring All Season" tires.....

Tire Rack Survey

In the end, I replaced them with LS600HL19" Hybrid wheels, and Bridgestone Potenza RE970s. Much better and crisper turn in with minimal change in ride. While still a large sedan, it handles MUCH more nimble than the MXMs.
