Default 1000 mile service

The dealer says I should bring my LS460 in for service at 1000 miles. I read the owner's manual and it does not really appear as if anything much is done at the 1000 mile service. I am not interested in the dealer setting any preferences and I plan to do the first oil change long before 5000 miles. Is there any need to have the 1000 mile service done?

I don't think they even do the 1,000 mile checkup anymore as it didn't amount to anything anyway. If you don't have any problems or questions I would wait until 5,000 miles.

Yes, they still do the 1K service. I wouldn't bother going in for it. It doesn't amount to much checking and they can do it on your first oil change...

yes it is free, but I think rominl said it... Does not mean it is worth the trip to the dealer. You can ckeck the fluids and tire pressure yourself.

My dealer advised against it, unless there was an issue that needed attention, which there was not.

They really want you to do it if you want the "Lexus Personalized Settings" set or changed. Sometimes people don't know how to answer the questions when they first buy the car but after a month or so they might want a setting changed.

My dealer does the free first oil change, but they're wanting to do it as part of the 1,000-mile checkup.

I've read too much about the importance of leaving the first oil in there for awhile, so I don't want it dropped at 1,000 miles. Now I've got to get them to give me the free oil change at 5,000 miles!

Our dealer in Houston gives maintenance free upto 20,000 miles that includes oil change every 5,000 miles or scheduled calender days whichever comes first and a loaner during service. I have had this on all our Lexus's including the 2001 LS430 which we purchased in Nov of 2000. I have had the 10,000 mile service done on the LS460L due to the time period even though it has only 6,000 miles on it.

As some of you have already confirmed the 1K service is mainly for the personalized settings. I also believe the 5K oil change is free...........at least it is at my local dealer.

in the fine print on the sticker itself, in the lower right hand corner, it states that "Lexus is proud to offer the following owner support package with each new lexus

24 hour, 365 day/yr. roadside assistance plan
complimentary 1st and 2nd scheduled maintenance services
lodging for emergency breakdowns 100 miles from home

Is it true that the oil from the factory should remain in the engine until 5k? If the factory oil is standard 0w20, there does not seem to be any reason why it cannot be changed earlier.
Service writer at my dealership said they only use synthetic oil in the LS460.
