Thumbs down LS460 annoyances

After about 1 month of driving I can begin listing the small and not-so-small annoyances and imperfections. Maybe it is just a case of elevated expectations. But in some cases the "perfect" Lexus LS underdelivers on things that are found in much lesser cars.

Here it goes:

1. Navigation motion lock takes the cake. Enough said.

2. There is a substantial delay between pressing the voice button and navigation guidance prompt. I'm used to pressing the button and speaking immediately. Having to wait 2 seconds for the beep annoys me.

3. Voice guidance sound volume is constant. I have it set to the maximum. In the silent car it is almost too loud. When the music plays, I can barely hear it. And it's not that my music is too loud. It's just that the voice prompt is given through one speaker, while other 18 continue to play at the same volume. As a result I can't make out what the nav says. I can only hear that it mumbles something. A $500 aftermarket GPS knows how to bring the music volume down and then bring it back up after the voice prompt. Why not Lexus?

4. Trip computer information is displayed one item at a time. I don't want to constantly cycle through 8 parameters pressing the DISP button. I want to press one button and see all information on the big screen.

5. The ambient temperature reading is duplicated on the multi-function display and in the climate control panel. Is this considered the most vital piece of information in Japan? I would rather see some other parameter (like Current MPG), preferrably user-configurable instead of this useless and often incorrect temperature reading.

6. There is no XM radio station list. When I change the station, the name appears in approximately 2 seconds. It takes 5 minutes to scan through 150 channels in search of a particular station. I want to see a scrollable list, so I can choose a station quickly.

7. When I am using the random/shuffle mode, I expect that when I click "Next track", a random track will be selected. Not so in Lexus. It moves to the next track in the same album. The only way to jump to a different random track is to wait until the end of the song, or toggle the random mode off/on.

To be continued...

i can answer some of them. the others imho are just how things are implemented. one can say it's good or bad depending on how he thinks or wants things to be. personally i might consider them inconvenience to my likings but that's it

1) that's been the case on all lexus. like it or not that's how it is. to me it's a good safety feature. i can't complain

3) the music volume doesn't lower when the guidance is speaking? that's strange. i have to check on the ls460 again, but on my sc430 and is300, when it talks, music volumes go down.

Some of the items on my wish list:

Tie the clock into the GPS so that it sets the minutes (hours could be programmed in by time zone).

Use the GPS feature to allow an altimeter display.

Add a NOAA weather band to the radio, including switchable alert mode for severe weather, this is a $5 chip.

I have others, but have vented enough for the moment...

The LS460 clock is calibrated via GPS. The user preference can be either manually or automatically updated. Time zone can then be selected according to the user's position.

I have only one complaint: Unable to switch temp from F to C - that is annoying.

1) Nav and phone lockout

2) Seat comfort - my sciatica has returned since switching from the 06 BMW 750 to the LS 460. Not enough padding, too narrow in rear seat area, not enough articulation control.

3) Sub-par suspension - the LS exhibits hard bangs and shudders going over typical road anomalies, and corners poorly - there is appreciable leaning to the outside corner of fast turns

4) Bridgestone tires not great performers, and quite noisy.

5) Needs Bluetooth protocol which automatically reads the phone addresses, as opposed to having to transfer contacts. The BMW did this with my Blackberry 8600 and iPhone - the contacts load in about 30 seconds - no transferring necessary.

6) Touchscreen is too exposed to light/glare

7) Great sound system, but it should have an equalizer, not just bass/mid/treble conrols

8) Volume buttons should be on front of steering wheel/thumb position, not tucked under the left side

9) Agreed - better XM interface required.

I only aspire to the LS - I will intentionally mis-set the clock on my ES 350 and see if it has the sense to correct the time.

OK. I found another thing to complain about. My back was hurting today, so I started the car, turned on the AC, got in the back seat, turned on the Shiatsu message, and ended up taking a freakin' 3 hour nap!!!

Damn you Lexus!!!

Not sure how much gas burned. I wasn't paying attention.

All I know is that when I went inside, my wife said she checked on me every 10 minutes to see if I was still alive.

it's too expensive in Hong kong...it's US$164,000!!!! it's almost more expensive than the MB S500

in the past, when a new LS model comes out, the whole street will get a lot of those latest models running around, but not this time!!!

lexus is giving up the US$100,000(price of LS430 or LS400) customers...i don't know what the management thinks
