At first, I thought the compass on the rear view mirror wasn't working, Now I'm beginning to think there isn't one there.

 

Same here-my LS460 SWB with NAV also does not have a compass in the rear view mirror. My GS430 with NAV does have the compass. My dealer was unable to explain and I can not find any wiriting that the compass comes as a standard feature. The owners manual says "may be installed". I used the feature constantly on my GS so if anyone can shed some light-pls post

 

I believe the standalone compass may come in the base model that does not have the Nav. Otherwise, the compass is built into the Nav as the screen will always show which compass direction the car is traveling, unless you set the Nav to always show North at the screen top. My 460L has the Nav but does not have the standalone compass, same as others here so far.

Our RX 400 has both Nav and standalone compass as did my former GS. This always seemed redundant to me but probably convenient for those who frequently use the standalone compass. Not sure why it seems to be changed for the LS but I doubt it was for cost saving reasons. I use the Nav screen myself so although I was aware that the mirror did not contain a compass I have not missed it.

 

personally it might be "helpful" to some to have compass in the rear view mirror nontheless, it's kind of easier to see anyway. i know the 3GS have that setup no matter if you have nav or not, dunno why they change it on the LS
