That website shows the same passenger volume for the 460 and 460 L...103 cubic feet. Are they indeed the same? I'd think the 460 L has more space inside.

Nice catch. Someone somewhere has made a mistake.

Where does it say the S class has trunk capacity of over 20 cu.ft. ?
You would think they are listing trunk spec. of their basic "standard" model with no fancy options : http://www.mbusa.com/models/features...50V&class=07_S

Mercedes Benz Canada listed the same trunk capacity, 16.3 cu. ft. I can't find "over 20 cu. ft" listed anywhere : http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/index.cfm?id=5332

Also, I think Lexus' measurements are suspect. If you look at www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm, you'll see stats that are hopefully calculated with the same methodology, regardless of brand. And on that website, the LS sure looks alot less roomy than the S, both in terms of passenger and cargo volumes.
all info is calculated using same methods, just that site doesnt have correct Lexus info.

S class doesnt have large trunk either, it has been an weak point in german luxury cars for a long time now....

i looked more closely at the trunk tonight with the rear seat upgrade. it's for sure smaller than my gs400 trunk, but seriously i don't think it's all that small. for sure one large and 2 small luggages no problem. i do wonder if 2 large is possible, but i kinda doubt that

btw, when i say 2 large, i am talking about 28" size

Default S550 vs LS460 trunk space

I first saw something here: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/Web....ee9e5eb/18727

but I have done a little more research now:

C&D and other sites listed 20 cu ft, for instance
http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache...s&ct=clnk&cd=3

However it looks to me like they rounded up from 19.8, because that number is listed elsewhere, for instance
http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/N...all?print=yes/ or
https://www.edmunds.com/insideline/d...ticleId=108988

Here's a site that says "Trunk Space: 16.3-19.8 cubic feet":
http://ifcar.net/info.sedans.ultralux.s550.htm

Also, even if Lexus' 18 cu ft claim is accurate, one has to consider whether the shape makes it as usable as one might hope:

I agree with this, having checked out the car at a dealer just yesterday. The space between the wheel wells is narrow enough in the LS that I don't think two 28-inchers are going to fit.

This is pure speculation, but I wonder if the 18 number is the "true" volume, more like the amount of air that the trunk would hold, whereas the EPA measurements somehow take into account "shape" and thus come up with a lower number.

they dont... all measurments are EPA measurments, they are volume measurments and they dont care at all about the shape of the boot, just the volume.

Did you actually check S class boot before posting how wide it is? :-).

p.s. trying to find official MB info is like as if you were trying to make an bomb. Almost impossible! Makes you wonder why.

From your words it looks like you are an avid traveller and a nomad. From what I see an LX rather than LS would be a good fit for you. Large storage space and possibly RSES in the next version out in 2007.

I hope they don't make it ugly like they have done to RAV-4.

Except that the bomb is un-official.

i agree, finding info on mb site is a pain sometimes

either way, i think it's just volumn as a hole. if they talk about shape and such, the sc430 might take some more hit although the trunk of that thing does hold a lot of stuff
