LS reliability & durability
I would love to hear about the durability and reliability of LS's, especially the ones built between 89 and 94 (that are close to 16 years old). What kind of problems come up?
I think it is this type of long term reliability that seperates the luxury car makers. I don't care if Cadillac had the best initial quality. So what. Thats when the car is under warantee. Its useless if the car starts falling apart in 3 years. As an electrical engineer, I know how difficult it can be designing electronics systems for the vehicle with long term reliability. With the new LS ultra packed with technology, it would logically seem that 10 years from now these cars will need many expensive repairs.
Only time will tell.

Unfortunately, because this is a brand new product, there is no direct way to correlate older LS to the new LS. You can only directly correlate Lexus as a whole, but not the LS alone.
Since the LS460 is pretty much a new car inside and out compared to the older versions, we can only "assume" that such detail to quality and reliability will continue with the product line.
However, this is not a "hypothesis." We cannot prove such quality and reliability on the LS460. You need to ask this questions again in the years to come.
Also, consider the current problems with the new GS, IS, and ES (seat belt recalls, transmission problems, poor paint quality, etc.). It may not be anything big, but it is definately out of the ordinary for Lexus quality.
Will the LS460 be immune to such problems? I don't think so...

Well they got it right the other times so you might assume that they did again.
A lot of the stuff on the older models was brand new. Completely digital A/C (no turney buttons, only push buttons) and what not. Stuff that the american companies still don't do.
It can be expected that some of the stuff will go bad over time but most of the new stuff that they added is tried and true electronics that has been used in innovative ways ie new programming of "normal" electronics.

As a note I drive a 1990 Celsior which has heaps more " stuff " in it than the Aus or US models had .
Something like 37 ECU's , so far all is well and this is the same for most owners , they are the most reliable cars EVER built , bar none .

of all the LS i have seen, their quality hold up very well, even the 90 ls400 etc... very strong even at over 200k or 250k miles
i would expect the same on the new LS, but only time to well -- a long time
