I spoke to the guy who totalled his new 650i for a while as we waited for the tow truck and one thing we talked about was iDrive. He said he didn't like the button way of using it but there was a button right next to the iDrive **** with a 'talking head' icon on it and he said that made the whole thing great - that is, press the button, SAY the command you want, and he didn't have to learn all the menus. He said the voice commands worked great.
why would you try to learn a new auxiliary system while driving on the road? i learned my idrive playing at the dealership, and then when my 7 was delivered, at home. took all of 15 minutes to get familiar with. it only becomes "idistract" and then "icrash" when you try and learn it on the road. too busy showing off to learn the car i guess?
