no, you are not getting the whole picture. hp is just one of the very few variable in the speed equation. in fact, hp is more about how fast you can go, but tq is more about how fast you can get to that speed. also gear ratio, tranny design, power train loss, ecu fuel timing, et.c.. all those can affect the overall "speed" of the car.

so with the extra hp at around 350hp, maybe the car will get to about mid to low 5 0-60, but that's about it.

just look at the s65, enormous power of over 600 and over 700 tq, but the 0-60 is "only" about 4 sec

i have a question about that 8 speed auto

MB has a 7 speed automatic, and there's is actually 7 speeds...not 1 reverse and 1 neutral

Well I know that about torque but Horsepower has it's effect too and a second in 0-60 time is still a big change, don't you think. Knowing Lexus they will find a way to add some pep. I know it.

They want to do it THEIR way, and not follow anyone. That's sorta the purpose of America. You can pretty much do what you want when you want.

......torque and tranny ratios is absolutely correct, a big factor that made the 98+ models so much faster is the addition of Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and ECTS (electronic throttle control) for better response. While peak hp and torque numbers may look good, if they come at very high RPMs it does not do much good. VVT-i ended up distributing the torque over a very broad RPM range, not only adding significantly to the better acceleration, but making the vehicle feel much more responsive from a standstill (a ton of off-idle torque). So basically the 30 more horses/30 more lb.ft., the change from 4speed auto to 5 speed auto, and the addition of VVTi, COMBINED TOGETHER resulted in the significant change from 7.8 secs to 6.3 secs

anyway, the hp pand tq numbers are right, the 460 with around 350hp and the future 500 will have about 400hp

and i love it getting bigger
The 5.0 won't be a reality. At least, not anytime in the next 4-5 years. The Lexus 4.6 will get 350hp vs Mercedes 305hp 5.0 liter. There really isn't a need.

I don't mean to come across as cross but I find it funny everyone including myself is amped about HP/Torque numbers and:

THE LS430 WITH MAYBE THE LEAST HP IN CLASS IS THE BEST SELLING IN CLASS AND ONE OF THE FASTEST ACCELERATING IN CLASS!!

Think about it With only 290hp the LS 430 with the new 6 speed is a sub 6 second car. Lexus has ALWAYS offered the total package and maybe no other car that is more apparent than the LS. LExus is commited to the total improvement of the car, not chasing "a number" like others do. You would never figure a car like the LS, large and a luxury sedan, would have painstaking efforts made in aerodynamics, every revision.

I don't think Lexus will every have the most HP stock and if they do, they won't hold the title for long (the Germans simply won't have it). Look at the GS 400, it had the most HP and was the fastest car in class. Benz and BMW simply unleased the AMG/M cars.

The same thing with the IS350, with 310hp. BMW is going to introduce a Twin Turbo 335 to beat this car.

IT NEVER ENDS!!

Yes BMW may come out with a twin turbo 335 but imagine that cost. I'd say about $70,000 and I garuntee you they will not sell that thing. As for the IS350, a heck of alot more will sell, don't you agree?

there is a 500, it's a hybrid of the 4.6L and the electric motor.... supposed to have 500hp....

and have fuel economy of a v6

and yes there is a need. it will compete against benz S600 v12 and bmw 760iLv12

expected cost = 75,000

from c&d
Lexus LS600h
What it is: Hybrid version of Lexus's upcoming LS460. As the ultimate green machine, it will reportedly deliver V-12 performance with the economy of a V-6.
Based on: 2007 LS460, due next spring.
Powertrain: A 5.0L version of the 350-hp, 4.6L V8 from the LS460 paired with a high-output electric motor. Horsepower should reach a healthy 500. Continuously variable transmission.
Competition: BMW 760i, Mercedes-Benz S600, Maserati Quattroporte, Jaguar Super V-8
Estimated arrival and cost: Late 2007, $75,000
