Question Air Struts issue and one other question

Hi all,

The struts on my 2009 LS460 are bad and I took it to my regular mechanic and he said the same thing but they're hella expensive and he requires half down to do the repairs (he gave me a quote of ~$5,000). My son and his cousin are telling me to remove the air struts and just put regular spring struts on the car instead (an Airbag to strut conversion kit). What are your thoughts on this....has anyone done it? What do you think the estimated cost should be?

Also, while driving it over the weekend a green HOLD light appeared on the dash. I don't remember hitting any ***** or switches so I don't know why it showed up. Can anyone tell me what this is and how do I make it shut off?

Truly grateful for any insight.

Since October 2024 when you joined, there would have to be 20 threads, at least, about this topic.

The most recent is:

New air suspension struts needed - cost scary

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...ost-scary.html

Using the search term "strut" in the 4th Gen sub-forum will provide you with plenty of these "on topic" threads.

As for the HOLD light you have probably pushed the button on the left hand side of the steering wheel without knowing.

It controls parking brake function/stopped in traffic, or like a "hill hold" function.

See this image on this site and zoom in for the location of the Hold button:

I suggest that you read up on how it works in the owner's handbook because I am not familiar with how it works, and it would explain it better than I could.

Why don’t you repair them? The original Lexus struts are expensive because they are very high-quality adaptive shock absorbers. If you install a different suspension, you’ll ruin the car. Consider repairing the original suspension — this way you preserve the OEM behavior and it will be noticeably more affordable.

I'm assuming that cost would be with OEM parts at an independent garage. I had my two front air struts replaced at Lexus over 3 years ago and it was $6000. OEM parts would be the best route but also very very expensive for a fifteen y/o Lexus like yours. After market air struts are available that cost a lot less but still provide a smooth ride and you can still adjust the height. Conversion kit would be my last resort. I'm not aware of anyone that had it done on the 460.

Keep us posted on your decision.

There are literally dozens of threads about conversions.

Genuine original airbag setup to non genuine airbag.

Or genuine airbag to coilovers.

Successful and otherwise.

SEARCH.

MSGA.

MAKE SEARCHING GREAT AGAIN.
