Hey guys, getting ready to buy a lexus LS460 from carmax, car had 88k one owner, looks like the last owner keep it maintain pretty religiously (carfax)the car doesnt have air shock (which is why I am considering it). I test drove the car today and the brakes squeal, not sure if its the pads or the actuator giving out. Carmax asking for 21k, I opted for a 4 years 60k miles warranty (300 deductible/$3k) all come together for about $25.6k...feels like I'm getting shafted but could feel like a good deal, any inputs? thanks.

Pre-purchase inspection is a must.

unfortunately I dont think Carmax will let me take the vehicle for a couple hours...that is my plan to do if I purchase the vehicle as they give warranty for first 90 days and 4000 miles.

Mine’s a 2012 AWD with 129,000 miles on it, and it’s a real workhorse — snow, rain, salty roads, everything. I’ve had to replace the rotted-out mufflers. In terms of repairs, over 14 years, that’s it and that’s all. I’m fussy about maintenance; even so, this is by far the best car I’ve ever owned.

There’s a long time members car on marketplace @swfla it has air suspension, but those can be swapped out for coils for cheap when they go out.

Another vote for skip the extended warranty unless it is OEM Lexus. Any of the aftermarket ones are a pure scam. I bought a 2015 AWD, SWB with the full load including the Executive package and air ride, for $34,000 Canadian ($22,000 U.S.) in Jan 2024, with 50,000 miles. Not a mark on the car and meticulously maintained. It was a Canadian car that was bought in Winnipeg and used to drive to Palm Springs in Oct and Back in June, so never saw salt.

good car, a bit out of my price range, I definitely would prefer a warranty. I heard the Mercedes guys rave all about fidelity warranty so if I dont have Carmax, I would get it through fidelity.

yea, I figured if they can replace everything then the car should be good to go for atleast another 100k.

I paid about that for my 14 with 84k and meticulous service history and only serviced at Lexus. Even had the control arms already replaced at the dealer prior to my purchase. I didn’t buy any kid of warranty. That’s a lot for a 12. I’d opt for the refreshed 13-17 style.

Actually, a PPI from a Lexus Dealership is a must. Not just from any shop. But the advice is sound regardless. Prepare to pay $200 - $300 for a thorough PPI. Tell them up front you want a detailed PPI document, not just some notes on a piece of paper.

This ^ I paid $200 for a PPI on mine at a Lexus dealer. I told them to check the control arms, valley plate for leaks, and any codes for the brake actuator. Guess what…the valley plate was leaking, and I got a discount on the car almost enough to cover the repair at my Lexus dealer when I brought it home.

I have a friend that’s a tech for Carmax. They have certain things they check, but they do not go that in depth. I specifically asked him. No Carmax tech is going to check for a valley plate leak unless they see coolant all over the engine or on the ground. If I’m paying full pop like that (and I did), someone’s going through that car front to back, inside and out.
