Default 2000 mile oil change, what do you think?

David’s channel https://youtube.com/shorts/KdCTTCRVZxs?feature=share

Do you think the Nissan engineer is correct?

I have been doing 5000 mile oil changes, not because I did not believe manufacturers but because I did not drive 10000 miles in a year even though I always used full synthetic engine oil. If this Nissan engineer is correct, I can do 2000 mile oil change. Oil change is cheap. Say I drive 15000 miles a year, car takes 5 quarts oil, each oil change is approximately $25, and it is about $175 a year, 2 tanks of gas.

I think a lot would depend on the duty cycle of the engine during those 2,000 (or 5,000) miles. If you have mostly cold starts and short trips where the engine oil does not heat up fully to temperature it might get some condensation or acid build up, and 2,000 miles (or six months) might be a good idea. But on the other hand if you have mostly highway miles at reasonable speeds (say 60-70) the engine is up to temp, not stressed, the oil life would likely be much longer, at least 5,000 miles with a top quality oil. Lexus says change oil at 5,000 miles or 6 months. I am sure they have engineers as bright as the Nissan guy who know about oil and oil change intervals. I seriously doubt the owners logging 500,000 + miles on a LS430 have changed the oil every 2000 miles to get to that point but you might look for their threads and what they say about OCI.

If you have any doubt about what you should do with your driving habits, get an oil analysis from Blackstone or the like.

Nonsense. As it is, the engine will be the last thing to die on these cars.

5k is usually the happy medium for most cars. Even without synthetic I think 2k is excessive and I have been a mechanic for over 40 years.

The Nissan engineer claims he reaches the conclusion by dissembling engines. Do you think one can reach such conclusion by looking at dissembled engines?

No since you had no idea how they were operated. You can easily induce a failure if you really want to and can also go much much longer than normally thought possible on oil if you are careful.

Only under a controlled environment. Same conditions for each engine. You can tell a lot by engine disassembly, which is why I change mine at 5k. If I do a lot of pulling with my trucks I will change it at 3k. My Lexus and 4Runner get 5k.

Oil and transmission fluid changes are critical to high mileage performance and longevity.

That makes sense. In the video David hinted the Nissan mechanic did it systematically, dissembled engines with oil changed at 2000 miles, 4000 miles, 6000 miles etc., but it was not very clear. I now change engine oil at approximately 3000 miles for Tundra, LS430, GX460, simply because they only get driven that much in 6 months. My son drives my Camry hybrid approximately 7000 miles in 6 months. I might consider changing oil more often for it.

I keep seeing people advocating more frequent oil changes than those recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Yes you might get an extra 50,000 miles out of your 500,000 mile car but by then the rest of the car will have given up.
The only reason I do oil changes more frequently than the manufacturer recommendations is because it makes them easier to remember.
On the LS430 it is 7500 miles for normal driving, my GTR1400 is also 7500 miles and my GTR1000 is 6000 miles.
I change them all at 5000 mile intervals simply because it is easier to remember.
