Default AMAYAMA - Interesting but positive experience

When I bought my 2003 LS430, the external trim piece that sits over the license plate and cover the trunk switch and lights was nicked up, the classic result of people not using the pull handle inside the trunk and reaching up with their keys in hand on the outside to shut the trunk. Later I found out that was a piece that could be ordered painted and going through discount sites be obtained for under $200. I bought it color coded, and it was a little tricky to install but I did it in about an hour. I was stoked.
Fast forward to my 2004 LS430 and it got a big nick in it on that trim piece. I could have put touch up paint on it but that always looks like crap, and I remembered that I could make it new for less than $200 and install it myself. I went to Amayama and sure enough, $190 and shipping. It took a couple months to get here but very non-essential so I didn't care, plus it was 25 degrees so I wasn't going to mess with until spring anyway.
Well back in April I got to work on it, and the most bizarre thing occurred that I did not realize until I went to the pain of removing the piece which is harder on the 04-06 than on the 01-03, probably to protect the camera. There are these screws that are permanently set into the plastic and then you use those to fasten nuts to, along with glued on rubber washers, and then there was a thin rubber gasket all the way around it, again likely to protect the camera as well as lights.....ALL MISSING on the new piece!?! Yep, not there. The piece had the Toyota named impressed in it, fully factory item. I stared and stared and stared again. There was no way to remove the threads or washers, and the gasket would have to be destroyed to be removed (factory glue + 18 years...you get it). UNINSTALLABLE. I was frustrated for sure, puts 4 coats of touch up paint on my nick, put it all back together minus 1 little clip I had to break in removal, and then email Amayama with pictures. I kind of wanted an exchange, but figured they would say sorry you tried to install it or you've had it too long. I was kind and didn't push, since I had paid for it 3 months previous. They took a long time but after getting no communication from their vendor (Toyota?) they declared it defective and refunded my full $190!! And they don't want the part back, so I don't have to cover shipping back to Japan!
I am completely happy with my result (except time spent and no new trim piece)! I have questions about whether Toyota is dishing out line defects to known discount vendors?? But for now I don't care and Amayama is 2 for 2 with me ( I saved $130 on a parking sensor with them and still working great).
Anyway, FYI for y'all and pics below:

screw threads and washers are permanent, cannot be removed from old one.

thin gasket sealed, would be destroyed if removed

I've ordered almost all my parts from Amayama, except oil filters and fluids that I got from my Toyota dealer, and shocks, brakes, and some other stuff that was cost prohibitive to ship. I had faster shipping times in 2020 and 2021 of 2-3 weeks, but recently it's been taking closer to 4 weeks.

I do believe they sell those bolts separately. Not sure if it's truly a manufacturer defect. Toyota IS generally weird about which pieces come with bolts and nuts and which do not, so it's a reasonable occurrence.

I have always wondered about their return policy, since what they state online is rather draconian. Glad to hear you were able to get a refund.

Thanks, @nvwls . Yes, I realize now I was getting crazy with that theory. The only conspiracy that every car company is involved in is how to make things harder for DIY-ers and get people into the dealers for labor revenue. I surprised myself with the job because I am normally pretty scared in the DIY department.
All I can say is the part for my 2003 was plug and play, but regarding my previous point, I guess I could see them removing those things to make it harder, thereby generating more parts revenue and labor revenue.
If they do sell them separately, they would have to be superglued in; there were no setting threads in those holes.
