My wife parked in our sloped driveway yesterday and opened the trunk. Surprise! it came down on her forehead. It's fine in the garage so she was obviously not expecting a headache. There are MANY choices on Amazon
I would go with the ones made by Stabilus. They are a little thicker than the cheapo ones in my experience, and also have lasted for many years in my cars. I have a set on my rear hatch on my 08 sequoia that I put on, and it still swings that heavy-*** door open without any problems after 4 years. some of the manufactures use Stabilus struts from the factory too.
I have a set of these on my LS, and they do exactly what they need to.

3 years ago bought "A-Premium Rear Tailgate Lift Supports Shock Struts Compatible with Lexus LS430" for $16.99 on Amazon. Still working great, very satisfied....
(Takes some effort to open first several inches then as angle increases effort lessons at about 20-30' deck lid will stay in place at about 70' deck lid will move on its own to fully open. To close take a little effort to start the close then at maybe 20' (some inches from fully closed) deck lid will close on its own if let go.)
I have the Strong-arm brand purchased from Amazon. It was an easy install and no issues with performance. I did the hood and trunk struts right after I purchased my 2004 about one year ago.
