Default New dipstick O ring still leaking

I was replacing my steering rack bushes the other day and I thought I would see how my recent dipstick leak was going and to my surprise it was still leaking!

It looks like however that it is not seated properly, any suggestions as to why? you can see the O ring below the flange...

that O ring does not look properly centered, bulging out on the side towards the camera, no wonder it leaks. My 2 cents...

Thanks TominPT, I think you are right. I found the below picture of where the O ring should be and mine is too high up the stick, not in the hole.

Default Dipstick O-Ring Replacement

I just replaced my dipstick O-Ring. I had some difficulty getting the O-Ring to stay down in that groove while I pushed it into the hole. It kept wanting to roll up to the top. I have just taken it out for a longer drive so I will check it today for leaks.

I had mine done years ago by my Indy. It was not an easy job. Old O Ring was hard as a rock. So far so good.

Default Possible cause

I have read in other threads related to this topic that it can also be the oil level sender if the o-ring does not fix the leak. I can look for the thread.

I think this is exactly my problem too, did yours end up with the tube properly seated? I have a feeling I just need to re-install and ensure O-ring is properly placed.

I wonder if an O ring with a slightly smaller diameter than the Toyota part would work better?
I'm all for Genuine Toyota parts but this might be one case where a variety pack of small O rings is a better idea...

Yes, I was the member who mentioned that happening to me. After my Indy replaced the O Ring, we found that the oil level sender was leaking. It was very possible that both were leaking. Fortunately, after replacing the oil level sender unit, my undercarriage has been dry since. Oil leaks can be tricky.

Did you lubricate the o-ring prior to install? I recommend a light coating of dielectric grease since it stays on there better but if you don't have any, clean engine oil should work well, too. I also recommend cleaning the bore to ensure there's no build-up in it that would cause it to be uneven or reduced in diameter.

Thanks for the input all but today I found out the issue was my incompetence...

I re pulled the dipstick and after closer inspection discovered the old O ring was still on there, I remember now I thought it was part of the dipstick tube because it was so hard

Old O ring still on!

Taken off, it broke in half immediately

new O ring on

Properly seated now!
