Default Shifter won't go into park

Got home today and put the shifter into park, but the most it will go is into reverse. When the shifter is in P, the gear indicator shows R. Every other gear works, but it feels like there's some play in the shifter assembly. I ended up having to put the car into neutral, use the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to avoid battery drain (the key can't be removed if the car is not in park). If I was far away from home, this would be a disaster.

Has anyone had this happen before, or any ideas? I guess it might be the shifter assembly failed, but I have never heard of these going bad. I'm not sure if there's a bushing that should be replaced, but it looks like I would have to purchase the entire assembly

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel while moving the shifter?

Not really, I mean when I put it into the Park position, it just goes into reverse. And the gear indicator does light up for Reverse. I have never heard of anyone having an issue like this

Shift linkage is adjustable. Diagram shown is looking up from underneath with the drive shaft removed.

There could be different causes, but in my case the shifter assembly needed to be replaced. An internal plastic part inside the shifter broke, so I had to get a used assembly since the internal part was discontinued
