Engine Air Filter - Apexi ?
Mr Kos did you not get the point about my LS400 running an Apexi filter for a long time ?
Over 200,000 K's in fact
Or do you just see want you wanna see !!
Personable experience with Apexi filters across many cars over many years .
Who cares if it does or does not increase HP .
Point is that it saves a lot of money over time and filters as well if not better than a stock paper filter .
If you get an increase in HP well and good .
If you make a mod and get 50 kilometers a tank better on average I think one could say it might flow a bit more air...you think ? I do so daily .
You honestly think that in a dyno test on a Supra that shows a bit more HP that the same would not apply to another car....Really !!
Mr jharris where did I ever say that there was anything wrong with the OEM paper filter ??
I simply wanted to share some knowledge that I know to be true about dry mesh reusable Apexi filters that save a ****load of money over time that flow a bit more air that a stock paper filter and filter just as well .
No more no less .
I guess expecting people to have an open mind that is non negative is a bit much even on the LS430 forum .
Before I bought the 430 I had an IS200 Platinum 6 speed manual which had the IS300 air box system fitted with ...wait for it ... an Apexi dry mesh filter !!
I bought that when I sold my two series 3 RX7's which run bridge ported 13 B rotary engines which I built myself , both had 48 IDA carbies which I set up and tuned myself with guess what... wait for it again ...
Yes , Apexi dry mesh filters in a custom airbox !!

And its not a negative mindset, the average LS user is looking for comfort and class, which is understandable. Not much by way of mods for the cars, especially in the US. Heaps better chassis' out there to throw parts at for more power right?
Do you guys really think that with all the millions in R&D manufacturers put in to designing cars they can't make a proper air filter? If aftermarket high flow filters really improved gas mileage and horsepower don't you think manufacturers would be taking advantage of that too?
If you absolutely have to have that K&N filter remember the oil coats the MAF sensor after a while and it will need to be cleaned. I removed the K&N filter from my car when I got it and installed a OEM paper one, there is no difference other than less engine wear.

I bought my 430 to be silent, smooth, and comfortable. I don't care about the filter past it better protect the engine as well as possible and not need changed more than every other oil change. Most here likely agree that a few extra hp is useless
Hmmm , I'm an engineer so to me its not about a few extra HP I might get while driving my Cruise Liner , who gives a woosey about that but hey anything for free , its more what that extra HP means no matter how small .
The engine is running more efficiently , I get extra miles per gallon and I'm saving money and time for very little input . .
As a note no extra intake noise can be heard cos still running the standard airbox .

If you want some more extra hp and better gas mileage do the PPE headers they gave me about 2-4 more mpg and they are good for 20 hp and 20 tq. They do change the power band though and take away some low end tq your power band starts at 2800-3000 with them installed. There is a little bit of loudness upon hard acceleration but nothing crazy loud that would ruin the ride.
Since your an engineer if you want to install a cone filter check out the ram air duct I made does not look the greatest but it works and the engine gets plenty of cold air.

I remember back in the day, I was a wee young lad, and the forum said K&N panel filter would yield 2-5 HP on my Nissan. That was 1998, people were still adding stuff to their tanks to clean their valves better and snake oil was cheap.
What I'm saying is I believed that I could get 2-5 HP for a mere $50 for the filter and $10 for the cleaning kit. After using it a couple of years I said my mpg drop is crap and I'm going back to OE, eventually WIX. Pretty sure if that car went onto a dyno there would have been zero difference, the only effect was more restrictive (remember K&N claimed the dirtier it gets, the better it gets. hmmm) What we believe when we are young. And I had already finished B school so it wasn't like I wasn't book smart, that has little to do with marketing
To confirm our suspicion that guy had some $3 mil. bench test equipment and debunked K&N. K&N never even responded, how could they, they don't even have access to that bench test equipment. But a sticker was removed from packaging where they claimed dirtier = better and their claims of increased airflow
edit this happens all the time, how about heart healthy stickers on food with American Heart Association logo--AHA said to remove it, they never endorsed these products, etc.

People please read carefully , the description was DRY read DRY mesh filter !!
For those still unsure that means NO OIL .
That is on hold for just a bit anyhow while I fit the Pumpkin Android stereo .

Apexi do not make a panel filter for the LS430 and the one in my wife's IS250 cannot be made to fit .
So seeing as I have an AC/DC welder I will replace the airbox with a custom alloy one that takes an Apexi panel filter from something else .
My son has an Apexi air filter coming for his Nissan Stagea M35 so I will see if its about the correct size .
