Default 03 LS430 - Running Engine With Valve Cover Off

Hello,

Has anyone tried to run the engine without the valve covers to troubleshoot an engine noise in the valve train? I know the coil packs bolt into the valve covers but I’m thinking perhaps you could just stick them on the plugs without bolting them down just for a test. I also know oil would splash everywhere but I’m thinking this wouldn’t be a huge issue if it’s just for a few minutes.

Let me know if this is a stupid idea.

Thanks!

You could do it, but oil will splash everywhere (but not as much as you might think). I think you could do it for a very short time to look at the cams. You won't be able to see much valve action....
