Sorry for digging up an old thread but I'm trying to fix my passenger side light pointing downwards and not leveling out. There isn't much out there to address the issue and this is the closest thread I've found so far.
It looks like this gray piece I'm pointing to is the sensor. Does anyone know of a part number I can use to buy one and would an aftermarket one be good enough or is an OEM only part. Do you think that a bad sensor would be a potential issue as to why only the passenger side light doesn't adjust (driver's side works fine)? I would think if the sensor is bad then both headlights wouldn't work and I would get a message on my instrument panel which I'm not getting. From what I'm getting from posts I have come across this sensor is only on one side? If so is it on the passenger or driver's side? Based on the picture this looks to be up front and looks like I would probably need to lift the car up and take the wheel off.
I would use Techstream to confirm that the sensor is bad. It should show some kind of wacky value or out of range if it's bad. Also be careful not to move the sensor arm beyond the normal range of motion, anecdotally this can damage the sensor.
Weird that one headlight moves but the other doesn't. I would suspect the motor or electrical wiring in the side that doesn't move.
Aftermarket sensor part # 924-755 (brand names include Dorman and Ultra-Power) should be a suitable replacement for the AFS sensor, according to other threads on these forums - search the forums for "924-755" and those threads should come up.
I fixed mine easily but my question for the group is why is there a toggle switch on the dashboard to turn it on and off? Every other car that I’ve seen that has adaptive headlights do not have this. They’re just “on” all the time.
AFS is the system that turns the inside headlight when you go round a bend so you can see better through the turn.
Most Lexus's have a switch to disable it. Why I don't know, but there are bound to be people out there who don't like it.
The self-levelling function of the headlights cannot be switched off as that is a legal requirement in much of the world for cars fitted with HID headlights.
