Default Motor Mount Replacement

Hello,

When replacing the motor mounts on a 01-03 LS430 do you replace just the mount (number 1 in the photo) or all the other parts (2,3 and 4) as well?

Thanks

You can just replace the mount unless you see something else is damaged which is unlikely.

thanks. Good to know the other parts are usually ok. For everything it’s not cheap.

New mounts from Autozone include parts 1, 2, and 3. Part 4 is the aluminum bracket that bolts to the engine block. Part 1 is the only wear/breakable piece.

Did you try the mounts from Autozone? What brand were they? I heard that a lot of people have had problems with aftermarket. Sometimes aftermarket can be good though.

Do not buy Autozone motor mounts:

I bought the Duralast from Autozone based on price and availability. I didn't want to wait for something to be shipped as the car was up on stands and I live in an HOA community. It looked the same as OEM but I can't really tell. Maybe I'll cut open what's left of my old one to see if it really is hydraulic. The link above is about the 1st Gen LS and ours use different parts.

Please update us with your findings! So many people have said they’re hydraulic but I’ve yet to see the proof of that

How do one check/test if the engine mount is bad? Or do you just replace it after so many years/miles?

Its usually replaced "as needed". Generally you'll feel errant vibrations when you didn't beforehand. Or certain noises that weren't present before. Eg: a clunk when you start the engine could mean a worn engine mount.

Ask and you shall receive. Here's where my mount broke. Couldn't tell until I took it off.

The mount is made of 2 outer pieces of metal crimped together and filled with fluid. The fluid is reddish brown and has the viscosity of water.

I cut both sides of the upper metal piece so I could pry it apart.

I then separated the 2 pieces.

There is a metal piece inside that was surrounded by the fluid. There is one port cut into the side.

Here you can see the fluid cavity.

After disassembly I still don't grasp how these are supposed to work. Both ends of the mount are connected externally with metal and solid rubber.

The fluid enhances vibration damping significantly over solid rubber aftermarket mounts.

Anyone with an aftermarket mount to cut in half and post images to present difference?

DO NOT buy aftermarket engine mounts.

So it’s settled! Thanks so much for taking the time to cut the old mount apart.

Thanks for sacrificing a mount to the engine mount gods. Think we all learned something here!
