When does the warning appear?
A soon as you turn the ignition on?
Or when you apply the brakes after ignition?
Or when you turn the **** 1 or 2 times on you light-switch? (assuming not on 'auto')

It's definitely in the brake circuit.
the stealership told the customer the ECU is bad but no one told me that until after I was knee-deep in the car for an hour

taillight failure
I have the same issue on my 01.
All bulbs light up. Message comes on when depressing the brake pedal.
Was the ECU the problem? or this double filament thing?

It is not my car.
As fast as I know they haven't dropped the 1100$ to replace it yet

There are small bulbs (driving lamp markers) in the front headlight assemblies that trigger this message. Check every bulb in the front and rear taillight assemblies, including turn signal lamps. The wording "taillamp failure" is misleading, since the front lamps are also connected to this detection system. Also, the system is sensitive enough that if ONE filament inside the rear DUAL-filament bulb in the taillamp assembly is burned out, this error will appear. As others mentioned, check the rear window brake lamp as well. It is very unlikely that the problem is the ECU.
